I’m comparing players and how they effect the game, not the role you hope they would fill. Yeah they both play LDE but how they play it is very different.
So crazy comparing the guy who was drafted three years ago to play the position with the guy we might draft to replace him, I know.
Yes it is crazy, because there traits are totally differant. JTT is a lot better prospect the Pascal . It’s like comparing Brain Branch to Tavon Wilson
This is were I disagree and think it’s a lazy take if this is what you see. And isn’t the strong end usually good at the run
I think JTT has much higher upside than most on this board currently do. I feel like there are only a handful of well rounded edge players that combine edge setting ability with consistent double digit sack production… and we already have one
17 players had 10 or more sacks in a 17 game season last year… (Hutch clearly would have)
Of that 17 many were in the stand up LB mold like Will McDonald, Van Ginkle, Cooper, Bonnitto, Van Noy, and Watt, and others were more DT like L Williams (Lawrence would have been there for the Giants too)
So really we are talking a very, very small sample size of humans that fit OUR SCHEME, have every down potential and can get SOME sack production.

Greg Rousseau
Tuli Tuipolotu
I think JT could fall into this range
It seems like you are overreacting to what I’ve written. I actually agree with much of your take. I just question whether he would be the best first round pick. If we were to take him in the first though, i would be okay with it. especially since its Brad Holmes were talking about!
I agree bro and I may be taking you wrong, it’s my opinion that’s guys say oh I don’t want him he’s to much like Josh Pascal , to me that is a lazy take because there totally differant players in what they can do. Length , arms, lateral movement and pass rush ability . They both play strong end and the run well but that is it.
This is an odd stance to get so hunkered down in IMO. All people are trying to say is that if you take JTT you leaning into the Paschal style of player as opposed to a twitched up flame thrower type. I think everyone recognizes that JTT is a significantly better player and overall athlete. Dana Altman wanted him at the UofO to play on the wing. That’s quite the testament to his overall athletic ability.
But if I was going to be grouping DEs into style of edge I would have Paschal and JTT in the same bundle. And that’s not out of “laziness”. That’s just my personal opinion and I’d imagine the opinion of quite a few others.
Maybe I’m looking at wrong, I sure don’t see them as the same at all, it’s like I said it’s like comparing Brain Branch to Tavon Wilson . There both SS but what they bring to that position is totally different. It’s like saying don’t draft Brian Branch because you have Tavon Wilson.
They’re not the same. I hate the comparison. I even asked why we would group them that way last week.
But, they’re probably right to put him there. I like JTT as an Edge defender more than I do Paschal, but if you see him try to turn and chase when a play gets outside, you realize the speed isn’t there. I think he’s going to be a good player, and I would be happy to have him here, but both he and Sawyer are probably not hitting on an athletic scale where we need. I think he presents more upside at DE than Paschal, and is likely to win more pass-rush reps, but is maybe a tier below where I think a lot of us want to be in Burst, Speed and Bend.
One thing I thought was weird was the Sawyer only repped 21 on the bench at the pro day. I would have thought he’d have a better number.
It’s mostly semantics IMO. I’ve yet to see anyone say that "my player comp for JTT is Josh Paschal. You and Mouse seem to be treating people saying that JTT is that style of Edge with people suggesting Pashal as JTT’s pro comp. I don’t think anyone has intended to do the latter.
But unless you are getting granular with your types of Edges I do believe they belong in the same bucket in terms of styles of Edges.
Did you read the whole post or just the 1st paragraph? ![]()
My response is more so about the general tenor that the two of you have IMO expressed.
That’s probably were I fail I don’t put them in a bucket. Don’t see how they belong in the same bucket. Like Ziggy Ansa being in the same bucket with Miles Garrett.
I think they’re in the same bucket as far as how they’ll be used by the Detroit Lions. That’s what @CuriousHusker saying.
I don’t think they’re in the same bucket as far as skill or evaluation, which is what you are saying.
He’s right, it’s semantics.
It’s opinion , he doesn’t see people comparing him to Pascal the player and I do, I see plenty here saying that. Big difference in play, But that my opinion. Some may want a smaller twitchy end then the bigger power side guy and that cool if you do.
In this situation I’d take Connerly and not feel remotely bad about it.
Mike Tice ranked his OL in this class on his son’s pod recently and had Conerly as his overall #1. So some people are clearly very into him.
Fairly high likelihood of being a Decker level LT IMO. In this class of tackles that’s pretty good.
