Answering seems pointless as a contingent will suggest it’s “Madden fantasy”and shut any and all aggressive suggestions down… UNLESS Brad does virtually the exact same things, and then I’m sure the there would be no apologies, and Brads decisions would be embraced.
The fact is many think Brad and Dan have a perfect hold and grasp on “their house,” but so does every Dan base, or every team when a new regime comes in and shows improvement, and when that improvement stops or regresses, then the Stanley thing happens!
We could very well win tonight, beat Minny once or twice, and win a playoff game… at that point Brad will deserve a mile long rope and credit for trusting his process.
We could very well lose tonight, lose one against Minny and one to Dallas and back into a playoff game…. If that is the case then we’d have split with all the “young” and rebuilding teams in our Division, and clearly found ourselves below the elite of the league, more in line with Denver, GB, or Indy…. The problem is we have DT1, QB1, WR1, LT1 contracts coming due, and if this foundation isn’t top 7-8 worthy and we don’t have immense draft capital or cap space…. Adding 3-4 DIFFERENCE MAKERS FOR NEXT YEAR- will be tough.
let’s pretend Chicago gets 4 great starts and 3 wins out of fields and Love the same in GB… Shitcago has 80M in cap space and if they want they can trade down for more picks, and still likely get the OT1, and WR1, and two top defenders just in the draft… and sign D Hunter!!!
I would approach Goff and ask him if AAV or overall guarantees dollars were more important, and then I would let him know we wanted him here long term, and we planned to protect him and build him a championship D
Goff- 3 year 150M extension on top of next years 31M
J Jackson- 4 years 32M extension as his injuries have held him back this year. He’s not listed in top 2 FAs, but he’s very valuable to us.
CJGJ- I would offer 2 years and 21M with 8M guaranteed. If he’s a pro bowler next year, he’s worth 13M in 2025, if not it’s a 1 yr 8M deal. Kind of prove it, it enough to show we want him.
Amon Ra- I would offer him a 5 year 90M. He isn’t an outside WR, and doesn’t have the impact that Hill, AJ Browb or J Chase do. I love him, but I think this is about where he lands. He still has a 2Mleft so it’s really a 4 yr 88M extension or 22M AAV- but he gets his security now.
Glasgow- I’m offering 2 years 12M with 8M guaranteed
Jacobs- 2 years 8M- a coming like deal
JRM- 2 years 5M
Julian- the exemption so he’s about free
Romeo- 1 yr 2.5M
T Walker- we save 5.5M to cut him, I’d offer a big V type deal to a lesser extent where we cut his pay from 12M to 9M and he only costs us 2M to keep. I think one more year removed from Achilles he could be good vet depth for 2M.
Goff- 31M (already counts for this next year)
Amon- 7M (only 5M more)
Jackson- 6M
CJ- 9M
GG- 6M (2M dead in 25’ if we cut)
Jacob’s- 3M
JRM- 2M
JO- 1M
Romeo- 1.5M
Walker- 2M
this add about 35.5M to us next year.
Wright and Houston on RFA deals- 3M combined.
This is 38.5M added but 9 additions to the roster and 3 re-worked deals.
We would have roughly 42 players under contract by my count.
We have 7 draft picks and our draft pool will be about 9M taking into around 51 players and 47.5M of cap gone
DT
Justin Madubuike
Chris jones
C Wilkins
period 1 want one of these 20M DTs all would be difference makers… Wilkins might be my favorite combo
Year 1 hit- 10M
3 years 36M
Year 1 hit 8M
We’d have to movers around 10M to make this work but we’d have out top 53….
It puts Alim in Jeopardy for 2025…but 4-5 of these deals could be cut for minimal dead cap in 2025 and the cap jumps and we lose 17M in dead cap.
Sewell gets his 5th year option signed, he makes 17M in 2025… we can make it so he knows he will be highest paid OT ever, but it won’t start till 2026- 5 yrs 150M plus? He will be 25 yrs old. He will have made 40M plus already so not like ASB. Gives us 2 more years to fill talent.
in 2 years we’d have out in Goff deal and if Hooker looked good, we do a similar to Erin and Love approach.
That’s the issue. Would love Crosby…but we have too many needs to be trading away 2 first rounders. Not to mention Crosby is looking to be the highest paid defensive player ever. He saw that Bosa contract
Sounds great from a Lions perspective…his agent would laugh at us though. Mediocre QB’s like Kyler Murray and Daniel Jones getting massive contracts have completely destroyed the QB market for teams. Even an average QB is making 30 to 40 mill per season these days. It’s insane
The best thing about this upcoming off season is I feel like the Lions have options and many paths to take to improve the roster.
They did a nice job last season grabbing some nice free agent guys. Unfortunately the injury bug has minimized some of those moves.
But with the current state of the roster I feel like they can go really go after best available or game changer type guys if available.
I think it is obvious that the DLine and Oline need to have an interior dude added on each side. A center that can play guard is needed badly IMO.
I have really appreciated Holmes approach. I realize not everyone likes him but I can see what he is trying to achieve. And I can understand the decisions he has made. And again I am not sure I fully grasp the lack of moves at the deadline but he is the one signing the checks so I am sure he has a good reason.
Your first problem is going on twitter for fan opinion. Absolute shithole of negativity and not only sports related, pretty much where the scum of the earth resides (not everybody, just the very vocal minority).
As far as this offseason is concerned, the biggest point of contention will be Goff because if you don’t extend him this offseason that’s a big black cloud of uncertainty hanging over the team next season. Might need to make a decision on him one way or the other this offseason or risk losing him for nothing.
Next will be the Jonah Jackson, extension for St. Brown quite likely then the focus on the rest of the roster. Needless to say that the REAL work begins for Holmes this offseason, honeymoon time is over.
It’s really odd how that this core group has yet to win anything of significance, and many worry whether they can beat Denver in Detroit, on a short week facing a few hour travel time loss…. Yet so many presume we are going to re-sign all our own guys with a Brinks truck.
Brad was part of scouting, drafting, and trading for Goff…. Moving on and getting QB wrong ends our window- PERIOD!
Goff has won 9 or more games in every season he started 10 games aside from the doster fire he was trade to in 2021. Even then it looked almost like a team despite a billion dollars in dead cap wasted and a bunch of UDFAs playing around him.
There are virtually zero metrics to show Goff as anything other than a top 5-8 QB in 17’, 18’, 22’ and 23’-
Goff has won games… lots of them with
2017
Gurley/Brown
Woods/Watkins/Kupp
Higbee-
let’s accept Watkins was a nobody, Woods was really solid and Kupp was a mid round rookie at the time. Zero guys over 900 yards receiving, or 9 TDs- just dealing it around with a 100 plus rating and 4/1 TD ratio…. This year was epic play by Gurley, efficient play by 22 year old Goff, and #12 D…. #1 offense
2018
Gurley/CJ Anderson
Woods/Cooks/Kupp/
Everett
spend a bit to get Cooks and got 1200 yards out of him. Goff lost his safety blanket Kupp mid season, and Gurley fell apart the last 8 games recording under 60 yards in 6 of them and missing a handful.
Goff Jumped to 34 TDs and 4700 plus yards and played in a SB at age 23! #2 offense, but dropped to #20 defense
2019
Gurley/D Henderson- the entire RB room gained 1200 yards and averaged 3.8 ypc
Kupp/Woods/Cooks- Kupp bounced back, Woods was great, but injuries and a regression to the “#31” ranked OL couldn’t give Goff enough time to get it deep to him. Still had a top #11 offense despite lack of OL and run game… bottom half defense again.
2020-
Akers/Henderson- another 4.2 ypc type season…
Kupp/Woods/Reynolds/Higbee-
Won a playoff game, battled hand injuries and surgery, lost Cooks, Kupp and Woods were banged up and missed time…. They did have a GREAT D, and this was likely Goffs worst showing. Between the drama with McVay and the finger- it want that bad.
In 2020 while injured, before being exiled… Goff put up 30 on the road in Seattle for a win, and then gutted out a 105 rating in freezing conditions in Lambeau, but his D was roasted by Erin.
