When would be the appropriate time to draft a QB with a high pick?

I figured I’d ask this question here as opposed to the Valenti thread.

Most of us realize drafting a QB this season in the 1st round doesn’t make sense, but when would it?

We never really thought about Stafford’s replacement until he wanted out and then we got Goff in return. When should the organization start planning for life beyond Goff or is that still at least 3 years out?

2-3 years out given Goffs current contract and no Trade-Clause

I will say only thing that worries me about Goff is his arm

Its not a weak one, but prolly around… Age 35ish, it def will get weaker

Basically, were stuck with him on this contract, and given his current play, hes worth that money rn

you don’t use a “high-pick” on a QB until/unless it is noticeably clear it’s time to replace Goff , we can get a back-up in various ways, again , I wouldn’t burn a high pick on one, when our Defense is screaming for help.

At a minimum, it’s the last year of this contract.

I suspect longer, as Jared’s style is the type that doesn’t deteriorate much with age. I wouldn’t be shocked to see a 3-year extension or something like that.

He is a sitting duck QB. Next year teams will use the same Flores game plan and expose him.

You don’t draft a high-pick at QB to sit more than a year, which means you don’t draft him until you expect to move on from Goff very soon. In the meantime, plenty of personnel needs a high pick could help the Lions meet.

Goff vs Flores defense prior to this year vs this year?
What changed?

If not mistaken Lions OL last year wasn’t great against the pass rush.

We ran the ball last year. That’s the key to beating those ■■■■■■■ and we couldn’t this year

look at the absolute mauling Matt took in his career here.

Last years O line wasn’t missing Decker and Frank…

and had Zeitler….

and I also think Sewell was playing with injuries much of the season.

And…. last year’s O line had Ben Johnson calling the plays.

Actually the game I think that exposed us the most was the Philly game. It was the game we saw the DTs and ends start their rush and then abort and go for the jump deflection. It was copied. A lot.

When your qb is showing clear signs of regression. Yalls qb isn’t right now, he just keeps getting better.

Seems like he’s got a few more years in him.

As long as they invest in the oline, that is

Even our division teams owned goff ,imagine outside our local pond ,it will get worse . Goff is already figure out , Chicago will say more

The 2028 draft is the earliest I would consider taking a 1st round QB

6’4 QB in Goff yet he has a high rate of batted balls???

I wouldn’t even think about it until Goff has a year left. Let the young guy sit and learn and go from there.

After we have an offensive line to protect one?
