The Packers took ARog in the 1st round 3 years before he replaced Farve.
It’s what smart organizations do. It is the most important position in the game and you want a succession plan while you have time instead of being at the mercy of what the QB class is the year you realize you NEED a new QB
It’s what ONE organization has done. No one else has done it once let alone twice. Every team in nfl history aside from the packers haven’t had the luxury of using a first round pick and sitting him for 3 years. Not to mention it working out both times. You are probably more likely to hit the power ball lottery.
You can do it with the idea of sitting him 1 year to learn behind a really good experience vet. But because you used that pick on him, he has to be starting year 2…the packers had to HOF all time greats. They are the outlier, not the blueprint.
It’s damn strange. But I think it’s more they are learning his throw times and then using crazy size and athleticism to block. It’s great coaching by opposing DCs combined with our shit interior blocking. I imagine it’s something they will work on this offseason.
Right after Goff wins the Super Bowl for us. Then we trade him for a couple firsts round beans plus whatever, and draft our Mahomes clone to carry on the dynasty.
The point was don’t wait till you HAVE to draft a QB and are at the mercy of what the QB class happens to be like that year and how much of the farm you have to give up in order to move up in order to get the one guy you might want.
Better to get a guy you like with a draft pick you have rather than wait until your back is against the wall and you absolutely NEED to draft a QB no matter where you are drafting and maybe can’t get your guy without giving away the farm
That’s what happens when your pocket collapses and your IOL is getting blown off the ball.
We need Ragnow back or a strong OC. I’d also like to see us Draft Taylor’s successor even though I expect Taylor back. It’s time to groom his replacement
Yeah well I’m totally on board with taking a 1st round QB for Goffs contract year. Thats when I think it’s the time to do it. But Jared is still in his prime, now is not the time.
You used the packers as an example and they are the only team that’s ever done it like that. So it was my assumption that’s what you were suggesting is the way to go. My bad bro!
But, not responding to you directly or personally, at what cost did the packers do this?
Could they have chosen someone else with that pick that helps them/Rodgers get the 2nd SB? I know several Packer fans that have that debate. And is, was, Love worth the pick?
You know what I find odd. Teams used to draft mid to late round prospects and groom them to be future starters. Often the player doesn’t work out but when they do it’s a huge bonus since most late round picks don’t stick around long anyways.
Instead teams continue to waste high draft capitol and give up on it only to see that player go on and have success on another team. It’s clear to me that most QB’s whether drafted high or not need years to develop.
The last late round QB pick to stick as a starter was Purdy.
I feel like today’s NFL teams do not have the patience to develop a QB let alone a late round QB. To me this is where a smart coach and GM could take advantage and always be developing a guy on your PS.
That’s one of the few things I think Bob Quinn had right.
Take a QB in the mid rounds every couple years and work on him. Two ways to win…the guy develops into your starter in a couple years or if he has any talent is trade bait when someone’s starter goes down.
Haha. You really think Flores invented some new way to attack Goff in his, what, 10th season?
The attacking scheme isn’t remotely new. What’s different is the Lions’ IOL frequent inability to handle it. Once again, Goff has put up huge numbers in spite of the OL rather than because of it.
