Atlanta just did this with the Penix pick. We can debate if it has or will pay off but they basically had the mindset of bringing in guy to win now while grooming the win later guy at same time.
I love me some Penix. His throwing motion is sweetness. But his is sadly made of glass. And I am now doubting he will stay upright long enough to do much in this league. Nothing like a South Paw
Like Willis, in GB. I think a guy like that could be a very valuable backup, because if Goff goes down, the backup presents an entirely different set of problems with a guy like that.
On the other side of it, Goff will be playing for quite a few years, so it could likely be a waste of time.
The 2026 Draft MAY offer the Lions a GOLDEN opportunity to address their acute OL woes in one fell swoop. How?
Lions currently have the 15th Pick per TANKATHON. Given
Assuming a Lions loss in CHI town, a reasonable case can easily be made to jump to #12 or #13, assuming Dallas, TB, & ATL victories, in which (TB vs, CAR) & (ATL vs. NO) play at Home, and DAL plays in NY against the sad sack NYG, who have no incentive to win whatsoever, seeing they have the #2 Pick right now.
Assuming the Lions jump to #12, IMO there will be a PREMIUM Blue Chipper available, likely an EDGE or OT. It is up to Holmes to convince either SF or HOU to trade their current #28 or #26, respectively, to acquire DET’s #12 for their 1st, 2nd, & early 3rd rd picks. If either SF or HOU agrees, then DET may draft either #26 or #28 for their future LT (Lomu, Dunker, Goosby, or World) their #44 for Center Lew, and either #57 or #59 for a stud LB or useable DE, AND have a TOP of the 3rd Rd #68 - HOU or #92 and a late 4th #127 or #133 or #138 with SF….SF - LT Trent Williams replacement or HOU - a DE opposite of Anderson or a LT to protect QB Stroud.
Lions get their LT, Center, AND LB/DE/?? with the TRADE PICKS. The proposed trade could be transformational for ALL 3 teams. Throw-ins are possible by either side, but its pretty balanced. Lew is the No.1 Center by all accounts, potential Ragnow-lite, high floor/high ceiling…I seriously doubt Lew will make it to the 3rd Round, and DET has NO 3rd Rounder, at present.
Drafting and developing a QB is never a waste of time. We see all around the league the importance of a backup being able to come in and keep the team afloat. Niners, Houston and Green Bay all had to rely on their backup QB to keep them afloat and all 3 made playoffs.
