Figured instead of hijacking a thread, there seems to be enough interest from the boys here to let our nerd side show. So here’s a thread for all the gaming stuff - could be video games, table top stuff, etc
Anyone playing anything good? I feel like I’m in rut with games right now and haven’t really been finding anything that holds my attention - at least through video games. Been playing a Gloomhaven campaign with some friends, which has been a fun tabletop experiece. (Think a more controlled, board game version of Dungeons & Dragons with a full, large campaign).
Also picked up Bag of Dungeon and it’s multiple expansions to play with the girlfriend, which has been a fun little dungeon crawler table top game that is pretty different every time.

YES, go back! haha. Act 3 is overwhelming because there is SO much packed into the city, but it’s so awesome. I’ve done 4 playthroughs of BG3 now and every single one has been so different that it feels like it’s been a completely different game because you can change so much in each playthrough. It’s actually just insane how much freedom you can have to quite literally do whatever you want and the game and story just roll with it.
BG3 has a great system. I just wish they had built on the system instead of the story/plotline. I would love to see different modules like the original NWN did.
I still play Skyrim because I think it may be the best stand-alone RPG I have ever played.
I am, and will always be, doggedly addicted to Football Manager in all of its forms. It’s a database game which I know isn’t for everyone, but it scratches the same itch for me as the draft.
Yeah, NWN was very awesome for custom content. BG3 is okay, but it’s really just not as good in any way as some of the tools for other games. It would definitely be cool to see them expand it, but I’m not sure if we’ll ever seen that now that Larian has mostly moved on to the new Divinity game.
And Skyrim is awesome. A while back I was playing around with some of the AI mods that let you talk with literally every NPC and they have memories and yeah…crazy immersive experience that makes Skyrim even more insane.
Yeah, I’ve gotten into a few of these like OOTP for Baseball and FHM for Hockey. I’ve never gotten into a football one since I’ve generally just done Madden franchises with my brother, which I know aren’t as in-depth, but being able to play the game as well is really enticing. But yeah, it’s easy to lose hours in those sim games.
Oh man. Skyrim is one of the best games ever made, and one of my all time favorites. This might get me going back into it. I still play the updated version on Xbox. I used to mod it for PC but it was always a fight to get the settings to work on modern pc. Xbox just works.
Actually, you could really help me out here. Do you have any two person board or card game suggestions? My son is an only child so I’d love to find more tech independent things for us to do together on the many quickly approaching rainy days. But so many games that are recommended to me really need at least three players to function best.
This would be the rest-of-the-world’s version of football, when it was first released here it was called soccer manager. For my money there hasn’t ever been a good NFL database game, but hopefully @CuriousHusker is about to change that.
Yeah, I won’t lie. Getting the AI stuff set up in Skyrim is a little daunting…but man, does it really change the experience. There’s a few different AI mods that have taken off the last couple of years and it just makes the game that much more immersive.

For a good intro, I’d definitely check out Bag of Dungeon and see if that is something you’d be interested in. It can be played with even just a single player. I’d start with Bag of Dungeon 2, as it streamlined some things and made it more playable (but all the games can be used together, so if you start with 2, you can use the stuff from 1 if you get that too). But it’s a fun little dungeon crawler that can be different every time.
It’s not out yet, but a game that my girlfriend found on Kickstarter and supported, Sea Beasts, should be coming out soon. It’s a fun co-op adventure game where you play as Vikings navigating the sea and fighting monsters. We’ve been able to play through a pre-released on Table Top simulator, but hopefully the actual physical edition should launch soon. They’ve had to move it back a couple times, but the game has been super fun every time we’ve played the pre-release digital version.

I’m only 40, but my mom was REALLY into JRPGs when I was growing up and so that was passed on to me. I’m pretty sure I learned how to read playing RPGs as a kid. I try to play a little bit of everything, but I have this weird thing called Aphantasia, where I literally can’t imagine/visualize things in my head like normal people…so reading books is very boring for me. Which leads me to really liking getting my narrative to through games where I can read/take in the narrative, but can still get the benefits of visualization since it’s on the screen.
A little different than the games you guys are talking about. I’m going to be buying BG3 when (I believe it goes on sale for Black Friday) and play it likely all winter.
Heroes of the Storm-if you’re looking for a fun 5v5 (similar, but less toxic and more maps/more and better team fighting than League of Legends). There are objectives that help assist. You level as a team instead of individual and you get talent points instead of items so it’s easier to keep it balanced. Usually 15-25 minute games. This is a Blizzard game and has champions from all Blizzard games (WoW, StarCraft, Diablo, Overwatch, etc). This game requires PC.
Smite 2 beta- Also a similar game in some ways to HoS but a 3rd person view and all the champions are gods of mythology. I generally play arena which is 5v5 death match with lane minions that go down the middle. You start with a 500 point health pool and every death takes away from that health pool. Getting minions or super minions into the other team’s gate also takes away from the health pool. Jungle camps on both sides for buffs. You can play on PS5 or PC.
Both games are free to play and only cosmetics (or buying champions/skins/accessories) you pay for. You can’t pay to perform better in game. Smite 2 beta gives a lot of rewards where you can get skins just by playing the game. I appreciate all this.
I’m currently running a dnd game for my adult kids and their partners. although I’m thinking of converting the combat to WFRP because I don’t like the dnd combat system of just ‘hit points’. warhammer has a much harsher system.
I ran a star wars 5e for a bit while half of them couldn’t play.
started playing dnd in 1981 and have played just about every role playing game that exploded on the scene in the 80s and early 90s.
BG3 is fantastic. I just with it was more open world like RDR2. I’d love for areas to repopulate with NPCs to fight if you wanted to but once you do something they’re just gone for good.
used to play everquest, then world of warcraft but I haven’t found a good MMO that I like. Everquest was probably my favorite because it was hard, especially on a pvp server.
I was never able to really get into Smite, something about that camera angle in a MOBA is weird to me. haha. I was a big League of Legends guy from like 2012-2017…basically all my time was spent playing World of Warcraft or League during that time. I really enjoy some aspects of MOBAs and wish that Blizzard wouldn’t have have basically sunset HotS.
