I’d be totally fine with bringing in both Gallup and Wilson as our #1 and #2. I think they could handle that level of responsibility and we could probably swing it for 22ish M per year combined. I may be too confident about Wilson as I’ve loved the HK I’d since his Junior year but I really think he’s a player and have brought him up as a trade target for like two years.
This strategy would let us wait till round 3 or 4 to draft a WR.
I don’t trust Mike Willians staying healthy much more than I trust Will Fuller to do so.
At the risk fo sounding like a broken record every year - trade down. Get three first rounders next year - one of them a WR. Only spend on a FA if its a bargain. If ARob gives us a hometown discount, or if Gallup is not looking to break the bank - then yes, go for it…very doubtful though. Otherwise look at people like Juju Smith-Shuster for 2022 whose value is way down right now and is still young. We’re not going for the title in 2022. You can wait on a FA or trade until 2023.
I fix the position through free agency. I like that we get to see our new WR here (Josh Reynolds’s) to see what he can.
But I get a true #1 guy. Allen Robinson is a guy I really like. He can do it all and losing him hurts Chicago.
I draft a guy too but after rd. 3.
Allen Robinson, Josh Reynolds (if he looks good here). Amon Ra, Cephus, Khalid Raymond and a rookie works for me. If Josh sucks. I look for value in free agency still. I spend $ on this position now.
Would you take Michael Thomas off the Saints? Pretty obvious he has burnt his bridges there. Saints are in bad shape cap wise, could be gotten for very little via trade if we are willing to take his contract off their hands.
what good does it do if we have a good D shutting down opponents, but when our offense steps on the field …they cannot move the football or score bc we don’t have any decent WR’s?
There has to be a balance and IMO it don’t hurt to get playmakers for BOTH the Defense & the Offense.
right now, we can’t hardly score. I have no idea how many draft picks we have and comp picks, but your not going to die because you didn’t use ALL picks on our defense , in fact —if we have 12 total picks and use 6 on solidifying the D, you will be improving it !!! especially if all 6 CAN be productive…
Goff IF we keep him NEEDS HELP badly to, plug and play or not OR next season will be a carbon copy of this one …no matter if we improved our defense. that’s another MYSTERY, what will this GM draft or sign ? more chumps ? , or will he actually hit on a few great players? Our history suggest…more chumps than beasts.
The question was what I would try to do. And I answered it. I’m not some clueless lions fan living in la la land. I know the entire question mark to the guys I want to sign is if they would even be willing.
Did I ever mention chris Godwin? Davante Adams? No I didn’t…so why you felt the need to even bring those two up is beyond me. Guess it made you feel better and your argument more compelling. Which I’m not even against.
This is why I go MIA from the board for long periods of time. So many people act like they know more than you. I’m fully aware that the lions are nfl trash and will be hard to convince a premium FA to come here. All I said was players like Gallup and Kirk are middling FAs that dont move the needle “FOR ME PERSONALLY”
This strategy to me sounds to me like this year, just spending more money on the same strategy. Gallup has talent for sure, but so did Tyrell. I think Wilson has weak hands. A good friend of mine is a Cowboys fan and so I pay attention to their games a little bit. I think Wilson sucks, and Dak needs to stop throwing him the ball. Gallup can’t come back soon enough. But that’s just my opinion.
I like Gallup. But if he costs 12m per year, that sounds like all risk to me. I don’t think he can outplay that amount of money, but can certainly underperform that contract. Maybe I’m wrong and he won’t command that much. I would just rather spend 20m on a proven commodity than a plan that sounds eerily similar to this years Tyrell/BP…at 3x the costs no less
Zero drops this year. 4.7% career drop percentage. His hands are fine.
You need to find better friends.
He’ll get at least that. He’s easily worth 12m per IMO. I think he’s a better player than Marvin Jones was when we signed him and the 8 or 9m per we originally signed Jones for is probably akin to 12M now. I was budgeting 15-16m which is probably high but I think Gallup gets close to number 1 WR money. His age will help him. That assumes that the cap goes way up as I assume it will.
If we didn’t suck so bad and actually had a victory to feel good about more than once every few months of games this kind of stuff wouldn’t bother us so much.
As I said I may have pegged him high at 15m. It may be more like. 11-13m per. I like him in that range.
I watched Wilson at Boise State. Kid can play. Is he a really good number 2? Probably not, but in the scenario in which you get both he and Gallup, Wilson can function as a bridge to a rookie who eventually takes over. If that rookie becomes our number 1 and Gallup slides down to being the secondary outside option then all the better.
I have a plan…Let’s only draft WR’s all 7 rounds and then convert them to different positions when we have too many. Sounds like a Matt Millen strategy. lol
Give me Courtland Sutton in FA with some of the Trey Flowers money, hopefully at less than what Galloday costed.
Then if Treylon Burks is there at 1b, perfect, I’d be okay with Olave as well (that dude is a smooth operator) or Drake London if he’s still there, he’s been very impressive this year with a weak QB (sorry Slovis).
If none of them are there then Bell @33; dude is a pro. Might be a reach if he doesn’t run a 4.5 but he’s worth it, dudes a boss. Wouldn’t be mad at Pickens there as well!
Then wait a little bit and see if you can get a speed small school guy like Khalil Pimpleton or something in the later rounds.
