Yzerman's moves made absolutely no sense, and he got clowned by SJ

Mrazek is still signed through next year for over $5M and we all know how mediocre (at best) he is.

Meanwhile, he gave a 2nd rounder to SJ to take Walman this past offseason, and the Sharks just traded him to Edmonton for a first.

Clown show. I am not seeing the path Yzerman is trying to forge here.

There isn’t a path as long as ilitch is owner.

I dont want to believe the Yzerplan is more like Millen than the SkinnyJoeDumars Pistons, but it’s gonna jump that shark soon, like after next year.

Not true Yzerman is using the cap…he is just clueless. Look at the players and they money they spent. Baseball i understand he is cheap. But red wings have spent money.

Agree to disagree. Yzerman comes to Detroit and forgets how to be a GM? No.

Illitch is a mizer. This is common knowledge.

Le sigh…

Things were so much easier when we were the Ice Yankees

The “Yzerplan” is baffling to me.

They have stressed building a young talent pool…
and being patient with the young guys as they develop…

but then sign a bunch of average dudes to multi-year deals that aren’t all that cheap.

Then… he gave away a 2nd round pick for nothing…
along with a decent player (Walman)…

so it seems like he he is trying to rebuild and win at the same time… which has led to mediocrity.

They have used the cap every year. He is clueless. Love him but not a great GM

They don’t have a choice. This isn’t baseball. There is a cap floor in the NHL.

So let’s get this right:

Yzerman took over a team with little talent in the NHL and no talent in the minors.

Every year under Yzerman their point total has improved. They’ve literally never gone backwards after Yzerman’s initial year. 39 → 48 → 74 → 80 → 91 → ? (granted, might need a little run to hit 91+ this season).

They’re a single point out of a playoff spot. They have one of the best, if not the best, prospect pools in the NHL.

But I’m supposed to be mad because 5 losses in a row, Jake Walman, and “GM didn’t do what I wanted at the trade deadline”?

Like i said agree to disagree. A great deal of tampa’s success is attributed to Yzerman. We had no prospects when Yzerman came here. Our farm is strong now. You have to spend the cap…you can’t horde it. FA have to want to come and the guys we want to come here have to be paid accordingly. Mike illitch paid…chris does not. Steve is filling the roster with what he is ALLOWED to do through FA…while waiting for the young players to develop.

Saying he is clueless and not a great gm is just an emotional response of a fan without taking into consideration all the factors involved and the overall body of work. He was considered one of the best in tampa…what changed??? Ownership.

The Red Wings didn’t become the best American hockey franchise by being cheap.

Chris Illitch needs to get that through his â– â– â– â– â– â– â–  head.

Excuses.

Has he been great. He was supposed to be the savory for the wings.

If the Wings were sitting in first place, you’d find something wrong and to complain about, just like you do with the Lions.

With that said and done. Wings can still make the playoffs

Lol. That’s all you got, and i was right with the lions. I had reasons to complain. Yes or no?

Was tough to watch last night (I think two short handed goals against can really make people feel a certain type of way), thanks for the well reasoned and laid out post.

I had a longer draft written up, but the reality is people don’t have the patience for a long rebuild, which is what the Red Wings need for continued success. Most people would happily drain the farm system and future picks to make the playoffs and get swept in the first round because playoffs. Same syndrome that a particular GM had that led to what, almost 10 straight seasons of playoffs after the last finals loss, only advancing past the first round a handful of times and never past back to the finals? But hey, at least we kept the playoff streak alive and were left with no talent on the NHL team and nothing in the minors.
