ZS likely wants to be a starter for the year. Does BH want/hope to make him a starter for the year? I don’t know, but this may matter (this is connected to, but not the same as, money).

Well, I don’t think this staff would give a verbal guarantee of a starting role to Aiden Hutchinson. BUT if I was a DE that was unemployed right now, with 100% of the teams having at least an “on paper” starter at both spots, I’d lean towards the SB caliber team with Marcus Davenport as my only real impediment to playing time.

Smith played on a reduced snap count most all of last year. Both in CLE and in DET.
I don’t think that’s changing. He’s better when he’s not overworked.
I’m expecting him to be in a rotational role and get snaps at both edge and possibly LB.

Wherever he plays I think it will be on a limited snap count.
If he comes back here I suspect he will help us both on the edge and at OLB.
I’m not convinced the Lions will spend the money.
They like a lot of their youth and signing a player like Z to the money he wants could mean the Lions would have to lose a quality player down the road.
Now if Z agrees to a team friendly deal I think we would welcome him back……but there’s interest in him and ultimately I think the Lions won’t pay what others will.
Hope it happens though.

I agree. I do wonder if he cares if he is a starter (my guess is yes). I do hope they sign him.
I wonder what Z cares about most. Money? Prestige? His body? A ring?
I wouldn’t be surprised if at this stage in the game he cares more about The Ring than anything else. So he waits until the end of camp to sign, saving his body and mind, and stays with the Lions cause it’s a good fit and great odds.
If that’s what he cares about.
