You sliding into Brock Purdy’s DMs?
Watched this Renardo Green.
I like him.
+Moves well.
+Good leverage at times.
+Good awareness
+sticky
-Not the best covering comebacks and curls.
-Needs to use jam.
-Doesnt get his head around at times. If he had a better feel for this it would take him to another level. Unfortunately, this skill a lot of times is just natural instinct.
Have to say I like Rakestraw better. Twitchier.
One of the things I like best about him is his upward trajectory of improvement. He’s gotten noticeably better every year imo, and honestly I thought he was even slightly improved at the Shrine Bowl from his play this season.
I thought his game against LSU was sort of a great encapsulation of his whole career. Struggled early (especially against Thomas), but as the game went on got better and better. Had perhaps the best game against Nabers of any CB all season.
Big WRs will “Moss” him now and again, but that’s true of any 6’ or less CB.
Yeah. I like all the CB at right spot. They could all help. I just wonder what the WAR or PPG differential would be if we spent heavy or high resources at CB. Do you think we would see a decent defensive PPG improvement?
Im just not sure it is worth it.
Is Copper DeJean worth all the hype? I am hearing his name a lot as of late.
If you value versatility and tackling then absolutely,
I can’t speak to the PPG improvement (though I would certainly hope so), but it would definitely allow us to be more versatile and confusing. I’m sure AG and Dan both have a they want us to play on defense, but we haven’t had the horses to do it. Part of obtaining those horses is definitely adding talent at CB imo.
I rewatched Kool-Aid. He moves better than I thought. He is more fluid than I thought. I just had visions of him getting cooked by AD Mitchell on that slant route for a TD. But…better then I had thought. I liked him, but moves better then i thought.
I anticipate Renardo and Ennis being similar type of players athletically. I don’t think either wows in testing but I don’t think either threatens any thresholds that would invalidate them either. I think they are in the same bucket. To my eye Ennis is more physical but Green is smoother and less prone to panic when he gets out of phase. Ennis just seems granny when he’s in trail. Perhaps you don’t see it that way as you’ve been critical of grabby CBs in the recent past.
Typically they’re guys who are underrated throughout the process then hit the league and are better than expected. Except this year, for whatever reason, Rakestraw has a lot of heat. I think it’s probably Matt Miller’s doing.
I am fine with contact. Not fine with grabbing. Good corners shouldnt need to grab because you should us leverage and then anticipate from there. Just like in b-ball…there will be contact. Just dont grab. I didn’t see Rakestraw as grabby. He covered againsf Georgia well. Stayed with Ladd McConkey well. And if you can do that, you can cover.
And, this kind of mixes in with my WAR and PPG thoughts. Ive see refs call penalties on CB that had hands on a guy, but it isnt a penalty. Outside arm around WR waist and reach to knock ball. It is how it is taught. Still…flag. This is when I know TV ratings and Vegas are in town. Makes you wonder why you should spend high resources on a CB. Unless you pay for the name. Then the NAME CB gets away with it. Michael Jordan treatment. Like if we paid for Sneed. Refs let him get away with more. For sure.
What do you guys think of Caelen Carson? I like him.
I don’t get it. He’s mocked him in the teens a bunch and I just don’t see that at all. Neither do I see it with Green of course. Thereafter I’m fine with either one but I have a strong preference towards Green (and a few others in that range).
I think they’re both comfortably after the Big 5, for sure (there’s a decent-sized tier drop between Kool-Aid and Green on my board, even though their ranking isn’t terribly far apart). Easy 2nd rounders.
I think ideally you want a guy with the hips and juice to stick with a guy. Run the route for them, as they say.
But I also think you can’t ignore the current realities of the league, and IF the refs are going to let CBs get away with grabbing, you can’t be stubborn and not take advantage of it. This is the Richard Sherman/Seahawks gambit. They’re playing the odds that the league doesn’t want the refs to throw a bunch of flags.
And the further you go in the playoffs, the more true it is. The refs start to swallow their whistles.
All I know is if you’re not taking advantage of it and other teams are, you’re at a competitive disadvantage.
That’s our sweet spot
Go up and get our guy out of that tier right there
Where’s Trice on your rankings?
PS good work bro. Solid solid solid list
Trice is just outside the top 50. I’ll expand to 100 next week and I expect he’ll come up pretty quickly.
33 of them
Yes, this is my point. Why spend high resources if this is the case?
Smart guy ![]()
That made me laugh
I am on board with you on Trice. Everything you said. So many guys to find this skill. I like Kneeland. And I am really liking Eric Watt for where he will go.
