There was once a time when people on this board were claiming Cam was way better than Stafford. Even the best QB in the league some argued.
He was never a good QB. It was his legs that made him dangerous.
How those people still put him ahead of Manning, Brees, Brady, and Rogers is beyond me. Let alone Stafford but there were a lot of posters who thought that.
Just roll with Blough, dump Boyle and let that be that. He knows the offense and playbook and anyone we bring in wonāt, so that screws up a lot at this point in the season. The failing was going this offseason without dumping both of these guys and starting fresh with somebody much better and getting them up to speed in mini-camps. Too late now and giving ANY resources up for a non-franchise QB is flat stupid.
What I want out of a backup is a guy who 1) knows his role, 2) fits the offense (has a similar game to the starter) 3) can win us half our games when the starterās down. Think Chad Henne, Charlie Batch in Pittsburgh, Frank Reich, Bridgewater in New Orleans, Shaun Hill, etcā¦
Rudolph, for as uninspiring as heās been, has basically a .500 record as a starter. And thatās behind a terrible offensive line, one of the worst in the league. Heās no one youād want to count on as a full-time starter but heās a perfectly capable backup, miles better than Boyle.
Now I wouldnāt give up anything of value for him either. Either a low round pick or a guy whoās probably getting cut like Stenberg. But I think thatās about what heāll cost. Plus itās the final year of his contract, he doesnāt cost anything and we can move on pretty easily.
Agree and you get that done in February, not mid-August. If you do bring in Rudolph then it basically makes keeping 3 QBās a must. So you lose a valuable contributor so you can keep Boyle or Blough while Rudolph is getting spun up. Itās just too late. We need 2 QBās not three so we can keep the 53rd best player on this team. If you view a guy as someone you feel will surpass Goff by this offseason and he is going to be your anointed path forward, then that is the only way Iād make a move for QB at this point in the game. You canāt go Netflix at QB.
Eh, I think being a backup is more about being able to handle the live bullets of a real game than total comfort with the scheme. I mean from everything weāve heard Boyle is a super smart guy, but put him in and he falls apart. Obviously itās better to be more comfortable, but the coaches will create a scheme for the week he can handle if heās not all the way there. I think we can still get away with keeping two QBs.
I think we look for our backup from the cut list, if even at all. None of those QBs turn us into a winning team. If we lose Goff, time to go for the #1 QB. And thatās it.
Let me first say Iāve never been a Cam fan, his personality always annoyed me. But in fairness to him, his 2015 MVP was an amazing season, 35 passing TDās, another 10 rushing TDās. And they went 15-1 and he took them to the super bowl, but it was the fumble he refused to jump on in the super bowl where many fans turned on him, and rightfully so.
Same with Lamar Jacksonās MVP season. Unreal season. But for running QBās, they sure donāt age well or last long at the top. Teams should be very careful paying big $$$ to a running QB.
Pocket passers time and time again are the ones who have long careers.
In Carolina Cam had only two seasons where he had a completion percentage over 60%. He had just one season above 3900 yards and it was just barely. Thatās not what I would call a good QB. If not for his running ability he would have been a huge liability and once his run ability decline so did his ability to win games. Cams career complete job percentage is below 60%. But your right he was a 3x probowler and an MVP.
Lamar Jackson has completed more than 64% of his passes every year but his rookie season. His career completion percentage is 64+% but heās only managed over 3000 yards once.
Both QBās need a strong defense and to be playing from ahead. If they got behind and were forced to throw then they struggle to win games.
