A new backup QB on the way?

The one thing Rudolph has over the two current backups is a full season of playing time in 17 NFL games.

I agree. I think he has starter potential as a gamer but unfortunately he seems like he will never be given a real chance

Agreedā€¦ wouldnā€™t want to give up a pick for Rudolph other then a 7th rounderā€¦. or maybe a trade for a player we are going to cut.

Even thenā€¦ Rudolph has a low ceiling IMOā€¦ so sending the Steelers a good PS developmental candidate isnā€™t that appealing either.

There was once a time when people on this board were claiming Cam was way better than Stafford. Even the best QB in the league some argued.

He was never a good QB. It was his legs that made him dangerous.

How those people still put him ahead of Manning, Brees, Brady, and Rogers is beyond me. Let alone Stafford but there were a lot of posters who thought that.

er ā€¦ what? That sounds more like his college projection.

Wasnā€™t he a former mvp ?
He was a different kind of QB just like Lamar
But theyā€™re still
QBs that are proven you can win with

Itā€™s not Montana or Brady
And injuries may not let their style last
In the way of traditional QB

But imo I think itā€™s a stretch to say they canā€™t or couldnā€™t play QB

Just roll with Blough, dump Boyle and let that be that. He knows the offense and playbook and anyone we bring in wonā€™t, so that screws up a lot at this point in the season. The failing was going this offseason without dumping both of these guys and starting fresh with somebody much better and getting them up to speed in mini-camps. Too late now and giving ANY resources up for a non-franchise QB is flat stupid.

What I want out of a backup is a guy who 1) knows his role, 2) fits the offense (has a similar game to the starter) 3) can win us half our games when the starterā€™s down. Think Chad Henne, Charlie Batch in Pittsburgh, Frank Reich, Bridgewater in New Orleans, Shaun Hill, etcā€¦

Rudolph, for as uninspiring as heā€™s been, has basically a .500 record as a starter. And thatā€™s behind a terrible offensive line, one of the worst in the league. Heā€™s no one youā€™d want to count on as a full-time starter but heā€™s a perfectly capable backup, miles better than Boyle.

Now I wouldnā€™t give up anything of value for him either. Either a low round pick or a guy whoā€™s probably getting cut like Stenberg. But I think thatā€™s about what heā€™ll cost. Plus itā€™s the final year of his contract, he doesnā€™t cost anything and we can move on pretty easily.

Agree and you get that done in February, not mid-August. If you do bring in Rudolph then it basically makes keeping 3 QBā€™s a must. So you lose a valuable contributor so you can keep Boyle or Blough while Rudolph is getting spun up. Itā€™s just too late. We need 2 QBā€™s not three so we can keep the 53rd best player on this team. If you view a guy as someone you feel will surpass Goff by this offseason and he is going to be your anointed path forward, then that is the only way Iā€™d make a move for QB at this point in the game. You canā€™t go Netflix at QB.

A magic bean from Holmes looks way more promising than Rudolph. We took Rodrigo in the 6th round, so hell, no!

Eh, I think being a backup is more about being able to handle the live bullets of a real game than total comfort with the scheme. I mean from everything weā€™ve heard Boyle is a super smart guy, but put him in and he falls apart. Obviously itā€™s better to be more comfortable, but the coaches will create a scheme for the week he can handle if heā€™s not all the way there. I think we can still get away with keeping two QBs.

Rudolph?

Cam had more talent than just about anyone. His problem is heā€™s a petulant dunderhead

I think we look for our backup from the cut list, if even at all. None of those QBs turn us into a winning team. If we lose Goff, time to go for the #1 QB. And thatā€™s it.

Let me first say Iā€™ve never been a Cam fan, his personality always annoyed me. But in fairness to him, his 2015 MVP was an amazing season, 35 passing TDā€™s, another 10 rushing TDā€™s. And they went 15-1 and he took them to the super bowl, but it was the fumble he refused to jump on in the super bowl where many fans turned on him, and rightfully so.

Same with Lamar Jacksonā€™s MVP season. Unreal season. But for running QBā€™s, they sure donā€™t age well or last long at the top. Teams should be very careful paying big $$$ to a running QB.

Pocket passers time and time again are the ones who have long careers.

Haha yes and the injuries didnā€™t help either.

In Carolina Cam had only two seasons where he had a completion percentage over 60%. He had just one season above 3900 yards and it was just barely. Thatā€™s not what I would call a good QB. If not for his running ability he would have been a huge liability and once his run ability decline so did his ability to win games. Cams career complete job percentage is below 60%. But your right he was a 3x probowler and an MVP.

Lamar Jackson has completed more than 64% of his passes every year but his rookie season. His career completion percentage is 64+% but heā€™s only managed over 3000 yards once.

Both QBā€™s need a strong defense and to be playing from ahead. If they got behind and were forced to throw then they struggle to win games.

I have a special move I use with my wife. I simultaneously grab her crotch and sniff her hair. I call it the ā€œDouble Prezā€.

Sheā€™s never as amused by it as I am.
