Aiyuk agrees to 4-year, $120M extension w/49ers, ending holdout, trade drama

Good call

Thanks, this one was easy. Trent Williams is by far the most important part of that offensive line. The dropoff is massive. Even if the 49ers didn’t pay Aiyuk, they still had Deebo to fall back to. If Williams doesn’t play, they have nothing. Their line literally goes from mediocre to garbage. Having Purdy throw and McCaffery run behind a line with no Trent Williams was too scary for the 49ers to clown around with.

So you’re threatening other posters’ well being now?

Insane that I can get a timeout for a joke that references two Presidents of opposite political affiliation but this kind of thing is allowed.

But I didn’t major in Message Board Moderation in college so what do I know.

Who threatened anything? Pretty obvious life advice to me… But clearly some people are looking to get upset.

That, to me that absolutely reads like a threat.

But okay. I’ll take you at your word. You were simply being a good samaritan and trying to give advice to another poster.

I must admit I was wrong about you. Not only were you clearly not engaging in vitriolic, internet tough guy behavior but you were instead helping a fellow poster lay the seeds of self-improvement which will undoubtedly help that poster avert tragedy when he inevitably runs into a fictitious mafioso tough guy with a penchant for vice torture.

Now I feel bad for misinterpreting your devotion to the well being of others.

Passive aggressive sarcasm is a bad look for you… Why are you so angry?

Ah yes, Mr. TD in his pants … the illustrious magistrate of internet behavior.

Who said I’m angry? As I mentioned elsewhere, the great thing about threads is the proof is in the pudding. Your behavior is your behavior. My behavior is my behavior. If I think you’re out of line with your treatment of a wonderful poster and an internet friend of mine then I will speak up. If you don’t respect my decision that’s fine.

Now Trent too. Salary cap is bogus. No one should complain about Cap issues. This is straight up wizardry by the 49ers. Watch for it they will fit in a large QB allocation too.

They can do it this year because Purdy is so cheap. Next year is when it gets interesting, because they have to pay Purdy.

I think they’re likely just timing their mini-reset for when Purdy is in year two or so of his big deal. If they in fact go that route. At that point Trent and CMAC are likely in decline. So this does seem to be the prudent path forward for them.

I do find the cultural differences interesting. I think doing these things early and with directness is important to us. The 49ers tend to be combative until the 11th hour.

Wouldn’t it more so be like 2027 when his annual cap number begins to ramp. Two more rookie deals and then that typical low year 1.

I mean they could definitely structure it so it doesn’t pay him a ton at first, but when you’re talking $50M+, that adds up quick down the road. Plus I doubt his agent agrees to the whole “let the current contract play out before this one kicks in” approach, since he’s making probably less on his current contract than he will in a single game on his future one. It’s a little different for guys like Sewell.

I’m pretty sure once they’re eligible for a new contract they don’t HAVE to let their current one play out, though some are as part of the overall structure of the new contract. Could be wrong about that though.

How they spread it out likely depends on if they think they are still in their peak window. To me it seems like that will be unlikely at that juncture so they may not back end it as much as most teams do. Too early to gauge that. And they may in fact move money around and franchise him rather than pay him $60m per.

They could franchise him, that was an option I forgot about. I don’t think it’s good strategy overall from a player happiness POV, but some teams don’t care about that (SF may be one). Probably saves them $15M or so though.

But that ALL goes on that year’s cap right? So it may be more expensive for that particular season to go that route.

Yeah. I think the theory of the case would be:

  • SF truly does believe he is in large part a byproduct of the system.
  • Their older stars are holding up better than they had feared but they realize the cliff is near.
  • extend some younger stars out. Bosa? Free up space in 2026.

I think the idea that their prime window of contention this iteration lasts beyond 3 more years is a bit of a stretch. Deebo will have broken down. CMC will be 31. Trent will be nearing 40. Kittle will be going into his age 34 season.

So I could see them taking this approach. Heck then maybe they even sell off Purdy. They would have that second franchise tag which gives them enough control to sell him off to a QB needy team.

Obviously so much can happen by 2026. John Lynch could be inspired by his family name and leave the biz to pursue a leap forward in noose technology. Kyle could decide he wants to be a Renaissance Man at finishing second and pursue daytime acting and go after Susan Lucci’s record for runner up Daytime Emmies. Brandon Ayiuk could reveal himself to be Mike Tomlin in disguise creating an NFL firestorm regarding fairness. There are other less plausible scenarios as well of course.

I would be stunned if they didn’t pay him at this point. I think being a product of the system is just what Shanny wants out of a QB. He’s pined for Cousins for years for the same reason, I highly doubt he scraps Purdy now that he found him.

But you’re right about the aging stars. However, I’m sure they will want to rebuild on the fly. I bet they give CMC a lot more leash than most aging backs too because of Kyle’s relationship with him plus his fanatical fitness regimen. So I don’t see a complete rebuild coming, it will be interesting to see how they finance it.

The dogs got that covered…

There are people in each franchise that get paid a lot of money to manage the salary cap.
We see many teams find ways to keep good players.
That’s why I have no doubt that they can keep Alim and Hutch with upcoming extensions.
Teams get into trouble when they extend players that don’t perform and have to replace those players and eat a healthy portion of that contract.
Holmes has extended His young foundational players that can complete the entire contract while still in their prime. The other approach that Holmes employs is short term contracts that can allow a team exit without much damage.
Glasgow, Reader, and Decker all have contracts that end or can be exited after the 2025 season.
I don’t think Holmes has any “bad” contracts at present.

The Trent contract here is the one that may not age well. How long can he keep the exceptional athleticism that is his trademark?
