Michigan State should hold off IMO. Give Smith a third year. He did a great job at OSU. Give him one more year. Impatience and rash behavior is unlikely to get them out of this IMO.
Theres been no improvement with MSU tho.
Im a Walmart Wolverine.
But outside perspective. Theres no identity to MSU. Theres 0 NFL prospects.
But i think the BIGGEST problem with MSU. Is the Money! I have yet to hear about any serious money being spent. They need to spend money to get a serious staff and players in there
Development isn’t linear. Behave like a duck: calm on the surface but paddling like hell underneath. The trees that are slow to grow bear the best fruit.
Choose your adage.
Precisely!
It’s MSU football. In this landscape they are at a disadvantage. Cobble together what funds that boosters can muster and get him the high end RB and OL talent in the portal and see what he can do. I’ve seen the guy coach a ton in a pretty bad situation. He knows what he’s doing.
Good luck in todays, social media-instant results, I want my cookie and I want to eat it right now day and age.
For example, look at how many Michigan fans want to get rid of Moore already, who’s what 1 1/2 years into being the head man & undefeated against OSU, MSU, with additional wins over Penn State & Alabama teams…
Have they leaned into NIL yet, for football? They have the alumni/boosters to do so if they want to become a player in the arms race, I mean if Indiana has the money to pay Cig, MSU certainly has more money to play at the NIL table than an IU…
Msu doesn’t seem to know how NIL works. Izzo seems to not want to over due it, but he needs to wake up or he wont sniff a 2nd tittle. Msu has a ton of multi bilinors, im not sure why their having issues bringing in talent. Msu might have a few nfl prospects, but that wont get it done in today’s world.
Smith is a good football coach, but I think the jury is still out on if he can put the org in place that’s needed for today’s college football. Likewise I think Sherrone Moore understands putting the org in place for today’s college football, but I think the jury is still out on if he’s a good head coach.
Idk if Smith is good or bad. Made some wtf moments Saturday. I just dont think the way he coaches is bad for today’s game. Him and coach Dantonio both were build players up kinda of guys, thats not how college sports is anymore. Idk if Smith can adapt in today’s game.
In todays CFB if you are a power program you need to spend money.
And you cant have multiple seasons with 3+ conference losses.
Smith hasnt show any signs of improvement. Yes progress isn linear. But progress SOMEWHERE is key. There isnt a single thing i can point to on MSU that says “oh i can see where things are gonna get better”
A coach gets 2 maybe 3 years in todays system. Because every major program turns over a roster so much with the portal.
Apparently after a meeting at the governor of Louisianas mansion (yes, this is real) donors pulled the plug on Kelly
Football really is a religion down in the bayou
They look same to me. Players are supposed to get better. Oline same even after adding to the portal. Gublin looks a late nfl pick. Wr corse might be good, but Chiles is same player other then TOs he doesn’t look any better. Def is awful as well. Best player is msu kicker.
No way!! That’s insane lmao
They care enough to Bayou out.
But not pave their roads properly. Baby steps!
If I’m LSU I’m going hard after Willie Fritz. Awesome coach with established contacts from his Tulane days. Sure he’s older but get five to seven good years out of him and then find the longer term successor.
Oh they don’t, those are just the type we’re most likely to get. Gundy played and coached at Oklahoma State. Les Miles was OC before we brought him back. Jimmy Johnson had a lot of ties in the area by the time he was hired (had coached at Wichita State, Arkansas, and Oklahoma with a lot of the staff). Pat Jones was an assistant under him before getting promoted, etc… If they don’t have those ties, we tend to end up settling for a lesser candidate (Bob Simmons is an example)
It is, hopefully, a much better job than when those guys took it, though then again maybe not since the Big 12 is JV now.
What about this guy?
Wins at ton. Wouldn’t be pricey so you could put what you have towards players. Sort of the DeBoerr to Fresno State or Cignetti to JMU approach.
I’d be fine with that. I always thought really successful guys at small schools should get a chance. Then again they may have stayed there for a reason, I don’t blame them for wanting to avoid the shit show that is major college football. When this is the way:
….then staying at Ferris State sounds pretty good.
Hopefully LSU doesn’t come after Shep
I’ve got a fake scandal cued for that potential eventuality.
The dreads make drug smuggling believable.
Would be a homerun hire probably, by any org willing to make it happen
I think his QB from last year is tearing up Ole Miss now & he had what 3-4 Oline in last seasons portal cycle transfer up to major FBS D1? The guy can recruit, coach, develop, & win
