Campbell: Goff needs to 'step up' for 0-6 Lions

You don’t sign Williams and Perriman.
You sign at least one sure (as NFL possible) thing, and the best you can afford after that.

You dodged the question. With what money?

You combine what you were paying Williams and Perriman, and we’re under the cap, right now!

Those guys came in for low wages. Who are these great receivers you were going to bring in for their price tag?

The thing that bugs the shit out of me is when they say Goff has to have everything perfect and he can be a good QB, then expect him to come in here with far far FAR less than perfect and elevate the team. Nothing is wrong with Goff. He’s not “broken”. McVay didn’t destroy him. THIS IS WHO HE IS. If you force him to carry the team you are f-ed.

Campbell should bitch about Holmes and the fords before Goff.

Its funny how you don’t notice those little thangs when it comes to Stafford…

I don’t care how big of a fire you light under Goff, it’s not going to make his 3, 5’8", practice squad receivers 6 foot + and give them even #2 talent.
Or make his one 5’11" practice squad receiver a #1 talent.
I don’t care how you slice it, twist, spin, whatever.
You can’t judge Goff on what he’s had to work with. There is nothing realistic in any argument that says he has what he needs to be successful.
He’s already demoralized.

Judging by his body language, it sure looks like it.

First time poster, long time participant… love the dedication of us Lions fans here. anyhow this leads me back to my brother and I argument about “does the QB make the WR or does the WR make the QB”. I tend to lean on the QB make the WR (Calvin Johnson was an exception, thought they both complimented one another).

It all started with my bro not giving up on Scott Mitchel. saying he doesn’t have enough weapons that was until Fontes had enough and benched Mitchel. Night and day difference with Dave Krieg relieving him and we were actually competitive the rest of the year. with the same receiving corp and team…

lets just skip Joey Harrington era and jump to Staffords era. his first few games I knew this kid had something. I know we like to talk about if we had better OL, RB, WR DL…etc… just like every other team needs. Thats why its a team sport. We all been watching football our whole life and sometimes we get too attached to stats and ratings that we forget that football is simply football. these guys been playing their whole life, either you have it or you don’t.

I remember when we snatch Marvin Jones I was scratching my head as to why, this guy is just a 3rd WR towards end of his rookie contract making 50-60 reception a year average. After Megatron retired Stafford made Jones a house hold name as well as Gallowday. Now they’re getting paid else where. but if you read Giants and Jaguars forums you can feel the fans frustration with their production. Stafford distributes the ball all over to our WR, RB and TE. With Goff, game after game I noticed after his first read he’s ready to dink and dunk it off to the RB for 2 yards reminding me of Harrington. The numbers may indicate he’s doing fine but we all know most of these yards are in garbage time on prevent defense.

there’s couple games I’ve seen now that this kid Amon-Brown (Great route runner IMO) was wide open but Goff is staring dead at his primary check either Cephus or Hock and never bother looking else where. Our WRs may not be house hold names but they played their whole life and made it to the NFL. they are here for a reason and if given an opportunity to catch a football I’m sure the are capable of that.

after an 0-16 season we’re still rooting for them, WOW…Dedication!

Welcome to the forum.
Remember when Stafford had Chris Durham and an injured CJ?
Goff doesn’t have that. His best receiver is Swift.
TJ is still great, but, he’s doubled every play because opposing defenses have no reason to feel threatened by our never-will-be’s.

I watched the Jags Fins game the other morning. Jags have a lot of issues but Jones wasnt one of them. Not in that game. He was getting open all game, running great routes and making nice catches. While watching it I was thinking, ‘man it would be nice to have a WR like that’

Yeah, I remember when we had Kris Durham and an injured Calvin Johnson.

We were still top 5 or 6 in the NFL in total offense.

Goff ain’t Stafford so you might as well stop there. Maybe instead of feeling sorry for Goff having to deal with these WRs we should feel sorry for the WRs having to deal with Goff.

feel sorry for WRs that shouldn’t even be on an NFL roster?

Both statements are true. Not an either/or argument, to me.

Goff is in a shitty, shitty position - for sure.
Also…
Goff couldn’t hold Stafford’s jock strap.
That’s not saying Goff is bad, it’s saying Stafford is really, really good.

These 2 are only connected by circumanstnce, and the comparisons are not fair. Think of how we will talk about our next punter (15 years from now). It’s not fair.

Goff doesn’t appear to be the dude that takes over games. IMO
-he needs a fantastic run game
-He needs really good WRs
-He needs a good OL and/or a great OC

IMO
-Goff CAN throw while rolling out.
-Goff CAN run a complex offense
-Goff CAN win when surrounded by the right offense (OC)

Goff is not an improviser that will beat someone playing gym class style football the way Matt and some of the others can. He needs timing routes going to specific places in zones. He doesn’t appear to be good when a play breaks down, or if asked to improvise on the fly. He CAN do well on a designed rollout, but doesn’t seem to throw well, while scrambling. He seems to get caught in his mind and panic, when the OL breaks down. Dude gets to get better at throwing the ball out of bounds.

Stafford is really good at playing football, while running for his life, and this is likely the biggest reason for this argument. That arm strength can throw a pretty nice, fairly deep ball, even while running from defenders from many angles, and he is much more wired for attacking than Goff is.

Goff needs to be surrounded by a lot of talent, in a highly intelligent, highly tactical offense with a good-to-great run game.

Agreed, their WRs group and their starting QB both suck .

What does this mean, brother?

I’m not feeling nostalgic about the years of poor to mediocre play with Stafford. We had a better team last year with Stafford and still only managed a few wins.

At this point I’m happy to take Goff and the picks over Stafford. Now let’s hope Campbell has a plan and builds a team

Our defense and our running game are both better than last year. Our QB is losing us games instead of pulling something out of nothing. Or at least not winning them.

But because of Stafford’s age and our expansion team level of talent I do think the trade was for the best since we aren’t going to be competitive for a couple of years yet.

Does anger have to make sense

I agree with your post, btw. Well said and way to keep it level.
