Trey Hendrickson would have looked nice opposite Hutchinson; unfortunately, Brad Holmes disagrees
OP, you’re a stats guy. But yet here you are with hot takes after 3 games. I don’t get it. Don’t you understand small sample sizes? Or the rookie development curve?
Start this thread in week 3 of 2028 when we know what we’ve got in Moore and there’s a meaningful sample of data to evaluate.
First off, your posts in this thread have all been logical, fair, balanced, and respectful…. kudos!
I know football, basketball, and baseball are all very different animals, but there are some very obvious parallels. In baseball there is no hard cap, so bigger market teams with more cash to spend can BUY more talented rosters without sacrificing big future roster construction. Occasionally a team like Detroit overspends to “go for it,” but even then there is still a talent disparity. Remember when V Mart got hurt and we panicked and moved on Prince Fielder? We decided to move a bad 1st basemen back to being a terrible 3rd basemen, and while we had a POP in our 3/4 spots, we were a double play machine, and had zero shot to ever go 1st to 3rd…. It was a desperate move to fix ONE aspect…
What about the NBA? Let’s say Brunson and KAT both get hurt or into mischief in the next few weeks and miss the season… WHAT DO THE KNICKS DO? Hell- let’s use the Pistons and the Duren holdout- he’s a 23 year old who averaged 19.5 and 10 at age 22. We won 60 games largely due to Cade, Ausar and Duren, and the kid had a rough playoff. So what? There isn’t a better under 27 year old C laying around so we can upgrade…
With so much money and hope tied to Kerby and Branch… back in March/April it would have been hard to see us going big to replace two Pro Bowl safeties at prime age. Not only would it have taken steep resources and financial commitment, it would have been like us preemptively MOVING ON…. When you are a good team because of you best players, it’s pretty tough to replace those guys on the fly-
- What does that mean for us? It means that in 3 games Messidor, Bain, Moore, Young, K Faulk, C Howell, R Thomas, and Jacas have COMBINED for 5 sacks in 24 collective games. So in a full season run rate that would be about 3.5 sacks. Young, Howell, Bain, and Moore all have goose eggs. We signed Wonnum and drafted Moore in round 2…. I bet they finish the year with 8-10 combined sacks. I think SGH, Mac, Tyliek, is a nice trio inside and Hutch, DJ, and Moore will prove to be above average to good outside.
It’s a bit rough to see guys like Will Lee and M Muhammad getting starter run since they were pre draft darlings, and many had Genesis Smith up there too. Those guys all went shortly after a perceived reach for Rolder.
Seeing Amik crushing it on the cheap in Washington, seeing Jack Calpbell seemingly playing outside of his comfort zone, and seeing the lack of ability to hold a lead is making it feel more and more like it’s a scheme issue.
I don’t think the defensive backfield deserves all of the blame. The linebackers are bottom of the barrel in coverage. And the coaching is bad too.
She’s dead now so I guess I can finally say:

Well we got Abney, who the vast majority of people had rated over all of those guys (me included). It’s not like he’s avoiding the position. We’re also talking about a 3-game sample size. And for all that I was high on Genesis Smith’s playmaking, he was one of the worst tackling safeties I’ve ever evaluated. One game and I knew there was no way we’d be into him. And to me that is far more about Dan than Brad.
It’s going to end up being a really good draft and in addition to Branch the defensive rookie class may end up being impactful reinforcements once they get their bearings. SKH is already showing out and some combination of Moore, Rolder, Abney and Fitzgerald (cheating a bit with that one) can still pay 2026 dividends.

Portrays Wonnum in a favorable light IMO.
The early lead goes to Jacas and those who wanted him. Long race though.
Favorable?
Hes below league average win rate!!!
So aiden is elite.
McNeil is top 10.
Everyone else on the DL cant win.
Tylek isnt a pass rusher. Hes doing a great job as a Nose .
So meaning the opposite side of hutch is doing NOTHING.
So if Hutch is wide 9. Mac 3 tech. you put 3 OL On those 2 guys. Because the NT and opposite DE aint nothing to worry about.
Thats why they blitz 50% of the time. So they can try to get aiden and mac 1v1. But again. When you only have to worry about 2/5 pass rushers. its easier to scheme.
theres no pass rush outside of Hutch and Mac. 0. They all suck.
Eh, he’s got some decent overall numbers but I don’t think he’s been appreciably better than others yet (certainly better than Moore and Zion Young thus far though). Of the rookies, I think the most impactful thus far have been Cashius Howell and Malachi Lawrence, but as you say it’s early days. And the former is strictly as a pass rusher. Barham has really flashed too, but he’s playing as much or more straight-up LB as he is edge.
I want corners that can cover. I don’t care if they are 5’9 or 6’2. Daryl Green and Antione Winfield were 5’9 corners and I would take either or both in a heartbeat.
“Replacement level edge Pass rushers have a PRWR of 12-14%, elites are over 20%”
So lions have 1 Edge with over a 12%.
Nobody is asking for a 20% edge. Just a 14% edge rusher. Would be amazing. It would change this teams identity instantly.
Wonnum is a good #3 DE. Decent on running downs. Can contain. But not a good edge rusher.
Moore MIGHT develop into something good. But hes not a number 2. Hes a 4th right now.
Lacy is just a worse Wonnum.
Reed isnt in same air as them two. Yeah there is tiny cbs that are good.
So we have 2 top 10 DLman at their position and you think the DLine isn’t good? Thats a very strange stance you are trying to make here. Also noting that Tyliek is a solid NT…
Man, tough critic…
BH signed an Edge with a ton of solid starting experience. He drafted a 1st round tackle with his 1st pick in this years draft. The biggest resource available remaining was our 2nd round pick…
So you are either preaching we had to add a Trey Hendrickson level FA or you knew better than BH who to draft in the 2nd round. Because I hope you are not suggesting we pass on OT in the 1st after what we saw in 2025.
It’s not that Moore hasn’t been good. The tape shows him being manhandled. He’s getting dominated at the LoS.
But you know what? The line is good enough right now to where he can watch and develop. You just wish you got more from a 2nd rounder like that.
Hendrickson only had two sacks his rookie season. 0 in his second year because of injury. It’s crazy the expectations fans now have. If players don’t play at a pro bowl level right out of the gate they’re busts? Those are tough standards to meet.
This is why these threads need to wait till later in the year and not week 2-3-4-5. Wonnum had 2 sacks today…”HE HAD A FEW GOOD PLAYS NO DOUBT”.
And thanks a lot fyi…..every time I watched Bates kick a extra point I kept thinking about “how is he marginal, he makes kicks, who cares if a kicker is marginal, such a stupid list, why am i even thinking about this list in this moment”
So boo to you

And this post isn’t gonna age well. Derrick Moore will be fine. Nothing is funnier then a fan complaining about Brad being the smartest man in the room by being the smartest man in the room.
3 games in and your throwing the rookie under the bus. Good greif.
