Honestly I think you’ve got some time. Pretty sure it doesn’t normally start until that first big wave of FA passes, which will probably be too distracting for everyone anyway. AND affect who they’ll be picking.

Ill open the team picking thread but was planning on starting after that first wave ( after first week or two after FA starts)

Basically mid to end of march

Sounds good

Did we decide who we like yet?

I’m a feet guy, which means I’d prefer the Lions draft either the Georgia OT, or Utah OT Fanu. Those guys both got plus feet, anyone else move the way these two do?

Lomu and Miller both have light feet as well.

Of course the problem with light-footed OTs is they often struggle with power, and that’s true to varying degrees with all of these guys.

I don’t think it will ever be a strength for Fano, he’s just too thin through his shoulders and hips. And those 32 1/8 inch arms honestly make staying outside a real question.

Lomu’s got a high-cut build for a tackle, so the concern with him is if he can ever get enough strength in his lower have to overcome his natural leverage issues. I have no idea honestly, but there was some improvement from last year to this one. He’s still young, so there’s hope.

Miller added 20 pounds to his frame after playing below 300 for three years, but the strength gains were pretty middling. I think he’s just strong enough, but for how long he’s been with that strong of a program, you do wish he would have gotten a little stronger.

That leaves Freeling as the guy I have the highest hopes for. He needs to add strength for sure, but he has the highest-level strength flashes, they’re just inconsistent. Which, like Lomu, you can sort of forgive since he’s so young. Many college OTs haven’t come into their full strength by their 3rd years in college, they’re only a couple of years removed from being 250 pound recruits.

UNLIKE Lomu, Freeling doesn’t have a tall, long-legged build. He’s also had better strength flashes on tape. I fully expect him to be plenty strong enough for the league in time.

Iheanachor also has light feet, and unlike those others, flashes plenty of strength too. His issues are mental imo, you can tell watching him he’s new to the game. He just doesn’t have that natural feel of someone who grew up with it. Now that doesn’t mean he can’t overcome it, the strides he’s made already are super impressive, but I think he’s much further away than some of the other guys.

My post combine thoughts:

  • I was hoping for a better showing from the top receivers and top corners to drive some of the other talent down the board. A couple of perimeter players will probably still go early but if I was picking in the top 12, I’d be very tempted to circle back for my receiver or corner at the top of the 2nd.
  • There’s some rumours about Love going as high as #4 and there’s a decent chance that Sadiq now goes before we pick. If true, for me, this is good for us. We don’t really need offensive weapons. We’ve arguably become too much of a finesse team.
  • The elite talent such as Styles, Downs, and Reese are all probably long gone before we pick. As are Bain and Bailey despite their shortcomings. With the exception of Bailey, I think we’d pick any of these at #17 if they fell, but they’re highly unlikely to do so.
  • For me, that really leaves us with the trenches which has always looked the most likely pick. On the defensive side of the ball, I just don’t think there’s anyone worth #17 after those already mentioned. The only one I’d consider is Caleb Banks. That would cause some consternation for an number of reasons - but I think he could be transformative.
  • On the offensive side of the trenches, Maugioa has always looked a very sensible pick for the Cardinals or Browns given their needs. Freeling now may well go before our pick. Fano might fall because of his length - but his versatility might really work for us - I like the idea of someone who might be able to play any position across the line. I wonder if it was us asking him to take snaps under center yesterday - I can’t think of any other team that would consider picking him in the top 20 with the plan to move him to center and he’s almost certainly going in the top 20. One of Fano or Freeling is probably the most likely outcome for me as things stand. I’d be personally happy with that. And I’d say it’s about 50 / 50 that one is available.
  • If none of the above make it to #17, I don’t mind Iheanchor as a consolation prize, especially if we can trade down a few spots. My guess is that our FO might prefer Faulk or Miller though.
  • I’d like someone like Lawrence or Jacas in round 2. I can see our FO going with someone like Ponds.
  • Best case scenario for me is that they trade back and parlay the resulting picks with their now two 4th round picks to try to pick up a trio like Malachi Lawrence, Bud Clark and Sam Roush. You can imagine them loving Roush. Did every drill and test at the combine. And going heavier with multiple blocking tight ends is what everyone is talking about offensively. You can imagine Petsing being all over the idea of trying to re-create the Lions’ bully ball from yesteryear.

I’d almost certainly totally wrong about all of the above!

I agree about a lot of this, seems to me like you’ve got your finger on the pulse of the upper part of the 1st round anyway.

And I’m with you at DL, Banks is really the only one I like if Bain and Bailey are gone (and agree that Bailey probably isn’t our FO’s cup of tea). That said if we go Faulk I’d be fine with it. There are other guys I prefer, but there are a lot of guys I’d take Faulk over as well. I’d also be only slightly disappointed by Parker or Young. They wouldn’t be who I’d take, but I’d get it, and I’ve certainly been wrong about guys before.

On Fano, I’ve been hearing about him as a possible center convert for a couple of months now, so I doubt we’re the only ones thinking it. And while we might be the only team specifically looking at a C/T prospect, A LOT of teams value versatile lineman, and Fano ending up at guard isn’t out of the question. Hell the Rams are about to lose 4/5ths of their OL over the coming couple of years, I could easily see them drafting him and seeing where he works out best.

I also wonder whether or not Fano’s our type. He’s technically awesome and moves like the wind, but he struggles in a phone booth and this FO has thus far favored power profiles in high OL picks. Doesn’t mean we wouldn’t stray from that - the sample size is small, after all - but he isn’t our typical type. Maybe if we were looking at him as a C only (Frank wasn’t a huge bully either), but that’s pretty developmental for that early.

Sadly, I think Freeling is long gone.

I have been one of Iheanachor’s biggest champions on here, but sadly I think the pendulum has swung too far the other way. Yes, the ceiling is immense, but what I think people aren’t putting enough stock into is how far he has to go mentally. He just doesn’t have that spatial awareness long-time OL have, he gets fooled by defenses on stunts and blitzes, on and on. He looks like a guy who’s new to the game. Of course that doesn’t mean he can’t get there, but I think he’ll take more time than any of the others. When I thought he was an option at 51 I was all over him, but it really seems like that’s not gonna happen now.

I also can’t rule out Proctor as an option, no matter how much I personally wouldn’t like it. But a lot of smart people seem to really like him, I’ve been wrong before, and he fits our type to a T.

Love the idea of a trade back, but as a draft nerd I always do and rarely get what I want lol.

Which brings me to the final option, one you didn’t bring up and which I don’t love, but one that I think has to be discussed… the trade up.

It would be especially painful this year since we don’t have a lot of picks, but never dismiss the notion of Brad falling in love with a guy. I think that’s the #1 box to check for any future Lion… did we fall in love with you or not?

So if Bain, Mauigoa, Styles, Downs, or Freeling starts to fall even a little, I wouldn’t be surprised at all to hear we were making calls.
