Orlovsky made a decent career as second fiddle. Had a long career as well.
It’s not an ideal situation for Hooker, but there is certainly worse. Goff is not likely to get injured as he’s a strict pocket passer that gets rid of the ball really fast and has a great o-line, so he takes very little abuse. But still, everyone gets injured playing football eventually. It’s a dangerous game unless you’re the kicker or punter.
Hooker is getting underrated here because we have to show commitment to Goff or something like that. But I see him at least a good a prospect as JJ McCarthy. He’s a little older but who really cares. As long as he’s healthy, that’s what’s really important. So I’m excited to see him play, even if only in the preseason. He should, IMO, see a majority of the playing time in preseason. He needs the reps.
No teams viewed him that way, as he wasn’t drafted early. The injury would not alter his draft position, teams wouldn’t worry about him sitting and learning a year on a rookie contract.
Really looking forward to seeing him play this preseason as well.
Also, if Hendon’s career ends up being that of a high end back up. Him being around our organization’s offensive minds will help him a lot. Daniel learning from Reid is likely why he scored those inflated backup QB contracts.
To hold a clipboard/playsheet? That wouldn’t suck.
I think JJ is far better as a QB prospect than HH.
The offense that JJ ran is much more NFL similar than anything HH has ran in years if ever.
Nobody seems to remember the “We need a better backup QB” hysteria at this place some years ago.
Hooker is absolutely unproven at this point.
I loved the Hooker pick from the moment we took him. He is still unproven, but he is filling the backup role, and if we didn’t have him, we’d have to pay a veteran backup QB. Looking at the contracts that are out there for the journeyman type QB, you can see that the excess value that Hooker is creating for us is somewhere around $4M per year. So you spend a third round pick, but save $4M against the cap for the time he is the backup QB (2024, 2025, and 2026). That $12M will be helpful to lock up other key pieces of this team instead of giving it to a vet on the bench.

I’m just saying, Las Vegas needs a QB and it’s in the only state with legal prostitution. It’s practically a done deal.
I’m old enough to remember Charlie Batch blowing his knee in OTA’s. I’m glad we have HH.
No. ■■■■ no. Hell no. He is worth more to us as a backup than the late round beans he would return. We need a good back up more than getting our 3rd round pick back (at best - likely lower).
My thoughts exactly.
There’s a lot of reasons to like the Hooker pick.
-
A cost controlled backup.
-
1st round talent on an injury discount.
-
Trade chip or comp pick. I love Goff, but give me odds on playing every one of the next 51 regular season games over the next three years. So let’s say Hooker comes in and rips it up, other teams will start calling.
-
Ben Johnson. It seems inevitable that Johnson will be a Head Coach soon. It’s also incredibly likely that he will be heading to a team with a lousy QB who got the last guy fired. Why not trade for Hooker? Same as when Holmgren and Hasselbeck went to Seattle…along with John Dorsey. The Seahawks swapped 1st round picks and included a 3rd round pick for Hasselbeck. You could see a similar potential with Johnson or Glenn in regards to Hooker.
Goff has proven incredibly durable, but if he WERE to get injured it’d be a real drag to have to kiss the season goodbye.
Just from the last few years…
Teddy Bridgewater (whom I like!)
Tim Boyle
David Blough
Chase Daniel
Jeff Driskel
Matt Cassell…
No offense intended to those guys. They were among ~ 100 guys paid to play QB in the NFL.
But THAT’S why you spend a 3rd on an insurance policy for your season, one you hope to never use.
Yeah, that’s right. Except the exact opposite.
Goff literally LED THE LEAGUE last year in QB hits and knockdowns while passing, which is the time a QB is most vulnerable to injury.
Goff has been hit more times in his career than Stafford, never mind that Stafford has played much longer. Quarterback hits: These 15 qbs have taken the most hits
Goff was knocked down 69 times last year while passing (17 games). For comparison’s sake, Mahones was second w/65; Allen, 51; Stafford, 43 (15 games); Mayfield, 35. 2024 Advanced Quarterback Stats | NFL Metrics | FantasyPros
Soooo… yeah. Goff’s been durable despite taking hits, not because he avoids hits. In terms of taking abuse he’s actually on the other end of the spectrum from where you want to put him - he takes more abuse than pretty much anyone else, actually, even if you factor in the fact that many other QBs run more (which almost always end in slides or running OOB).
Those are crazy stats, and completely unexpected.
Goff is one tough son of a bitch, despite looking like a Ken doll.
Love the Hooker pick.
I love the injured, talented player picks especially for something like guy who holds the clipboard just in case. Also who runs the scout team and who has incredible upside.
In two years I would like the Lions to do the same thing again. Look for a really talented QB that falls to the 3rd and grab him. Can never have enough good QBs on the roster. The problem is always cost. If we could have 3 Goffs on the roster for peanuts, sounds great.
despite looking like a Ken doll.
Watch Escanaba in Da Moonlight.
Look at Goff again.
You’re gonna hate me if you do.
Tell me I’m wrong.
Pretty soon you’ll be wanting to chant “Buckless” every time Goff takes the field.
