Leave no doubt. Build a team so good it can’t be beaten. I’m not into the “we’re good” mentality. For example, the Dodgers have passed on being “good” many times over the past several years. They keep adding because they’re never satisfied.
There was talk after the draft that the Jets at 15 and the Pats at 17 were both after Gibbs. 
The Jets GM after he was fired said they were taking Gibbs at 15.
HUGE difference is the Dodgers have no salary cap…..if we didn’t have a salary cap, I’d be all about it, every time.

You ask yourself do you like Kerby and Laporta and a first and second or gonzo and about ten million. What is more valuable.
I figured gonzo at 30 and Laporta and Kirby at 20 each.
People forget Kerby was on an Ed Reed pace when we signed him. This is another one of Brad’s signings that turned really unlucky when he got hurt right after. I suppose if there’s a silver lining to the Branch case it’s that the injury finally happened before signing.

Love Gonzales. But I don’t think it’s smart to part with the draft capital most likely needed to land him as well as the salary cap shenanigans we’d have to do to pull it off.
Parting with draft resources AND putting a huge new contract on the books is really risky.
That would ensure that some of our current guys that we want to keep would have to leave, while also taking away access to cheap, young talent.
Trading is fine. Signing free agents to big contacts is fine. Combining them really narrows your path to success.
I get the case for taking the risk, and I’d be fine if that’s what Brad ends up doing. However, there are real downsides to that path, and saying that not taking it is equivalent to not wanting to win is an uninformed oversimplification.
If Gonzo came here for just his future contract I’d be nervous given his injury history
Gonzalez was in the mix for us at 18 that year. We took Jack Campbell and probably would have taken him if Gonzalez was still on the board. But there would have at least been a discussion if Gonzalez was there, because he was identified as a top tier player that fit our culture. If you go back to the draft footage, you will notice something that happened when the Gonzalez pick was announced. Typically we see the room celebrate when the team in front of us doesn’t take our guy. When Gonzalez was the pick, you can hear a gasp followed by Brad Holmes saying something like “that makes it easy.” They didn’t have to debate Campbell vs Gonzalez.
Gonzalez grew up in a household where competition was a normal part of every day life. His oldest sister is an olympic athlete that is married to David Blough. If Gonzalez is truly available, I think we will give a serious offer.

If I’m Holmes I’m at least calling and making a competitive offer. Lions are gonna have to rebuild the safety room anyway because of branch and Joseph Injury. Gonzo is a elite player going into his 2nd contract and more than worth 2 1sts.
