I know Many Like Kancey I don't But Have a WHY Question

To be fair, I like AA a little more than Kancey despite what KCS says lol. His short arms are super scary.

LOL that’s great. No matter how hard of a time I try to give Coyote over the years it always ends up backfiring

Like I said in the KCS breakdown. There are tons of guys I love that don’t make the list. But, what I love and what the Lions draft are apparently different lol

It’s like Gambling.

Don’t bet with your heart.

Bet with data. Use your brain. Use your gut.

KCS and others are great tools. No one should be making decisions on them. At best they are filters.

I believe in that thinking. To me the concern with Kancey is him getting pushed back off the line in the run game. NFL guards are bigger and way better than what he saw in college. His arm length is way shorter than others before him and it is a real problem that cannot be ignored. Fending off guards in the run game will be extremely challenging.
So to me he is a pass rush specialist and somewhat of a luxury. He is fantastic at getting into the backfield but IMO he would be a situational player and if we move Commish or Pascal inside like you say he becomes less valuable.
Getting him in the 2nd would be low risk/potential huge return but I don’t think he is BPA for the Lions in the 1st. I just think at pick 18 there will be a player available who would make a bigger difference.

for what it is worth, I do think he has the ā€œitā€ factor Campbell covets. The little train that couldn’t but did.

I still like Bresee, I know I’m in the minority but I think this kid has a high ceiling. The question for him, imo; can he get past the personal circumstances in his life.

I think he will.

Too clarify, not at 6.

Your not alone, i like him as well. He absolutely has talent and imo is the no. 2 DT.

Ive heard they really loke AA, and Kancey also seems like a guy they’d love. Though i have concerns about both.

If you look at him as a DT maybe it’s different? Or is it his PFF scores keeping him out?

I bet upwards of 50% of the people on here have no idea what that means lol. Buncha old fogeys and boomers, I tell ya

So I generally agree with you about Kancey. I have him ranked higher than you because I can see a path to success or at least contribution, but he’s still a 2nd rounder for me. And the fact that he’s a historical outlier definitely plays into that evaluation.

But, Bryce Young is a historical outlier too, and he’s my #1 overall player in the draft. I’d take him in a heartbeat with the 1st pick. So just being a historical outlier isn’t a reason to avoid him altogether, it’s just one of the checks in the ā€œconsā€ column. If they have enough that you think they can overcome it, then you can raise them back up the board.

So I understand why people like him despite the short arms, they think he can overcome it like I do with Bryce Young. I wouldn’t touch him as early as people on here want to take him, but at pick 48? I’d be fine with it.

Kancey’s historical outlier level is a full order of magnitude beyond that of Bryce Young. I can name Kyler as an example of a qb his size who threw a td in the nfl. Name the arm length comparison dl for Kancey?
I would be less mad at 48. But i expect him to be a 25-30% snap guy tops. I see him as a major liability against the run and the last player on earth you want lining up next to James Houston in such a situation.

I would take bryce too. Different positions by far

He’s part of a poor defensive line class… You’ve got your…

  1. Guy who has everything but the motor.
  2. Guy who has really long arms
  3. Undersized pass rush specialist with T-Rex arms
  4. Big guy who crushed the combine with meh production.
  5. Little guy who crushed the combine with meh production.
  6. The guy who never started for his college team
  7. Local kid, looks like Tarzan plays like Jane.

Take your pick.

The fact of the matter is Josh Paschal played inside and out in the SEC, and has reportedly carried weight anywhere from 268-283 pretty well. At 6’2" (and chance) with arms a shade under 33" he’s far less of an outlier size wise…

I see no reason for Paschal not to be bulked up to 280 by TC, and have Hutch, Houston, Comish, and Romeo balancing out the snaps at DE/Edge… I feel like a 280 guy whose mid section looks like he should optimally be 265-270 (Max) is somewhat redundant as we already have plenty of pass rush juice…

Interior pressure is great, but if it’s knife up field and put moves on guys interior pressure, then a guy is rushing like a DE from the inside… That is far different impact than taking on a double team, and bulldozing two guys back 3 yards into the backfield.

If you watch Jeffrey Simmons tape, and then Kancey’s side by side, it’s pretty clear they are the same type of player…

If interior 3T monster is truly that much of a focus… Trade the #6 and #18, and #55 for Simmons, #11, and a 3rd… Done

This is a great post

I’ve been toying with mental draft filters. I’m not much of a draft guru so this is more strategizing how to evaluate players.

  1. Can he play the position? This includes production, technical skill, and health (availability)
  2. How much does he want it? Including desire, effort, coachability
  3. Measurables. Are there any minimums he doesn’t meet that disqualifies him (extreme t-rex)? Does he have physical traits that weren’t effectively put on display in college (Adebawore)?
  4. Fit/need (I could see this being higher on the list depending on the round)
  5. Other intangibles that won’t impact evaluation

Top guys would check the top three boxes and Anderson is the only one who does.

I just made a post about this. Hopefully he can get to 290 and be our Cory Redding

We need him inside full time now that we kept Cominsky.

Cominsky/Houston combo at 1 DE spot is very solid.
Hutch at the other.

McNeil , Ashawn, Paschal, Buggs, Benito, D. Taylor

Not so much a desperate need anymore.

That being said adding Carter or Kancey could still fit the group. It would just knock Benito and Taylor back to the PS which is where they should be for now. Let them compete for the 4-5 spot next year

Where is Charles Harris in your plans @Lyonfan1?

I didn’t see his named mentioned.

Didn’t Harris play in %75 defensive and %25 special teams snaps in 2021?

What about the contract he was given after that 2021 performance under Brad Holmes/Dan Campbell/Aaron Glenn? Brad rewarded Harris with a 2 year - $13 million (7 guaranteed) contract. You like cap numbers…he is currently the 9th highest paid Lions heading into 2023.

Is Charles Harris not in your defensive plans? He dealt with some injuries but looks to be %100 ready for training camp. This guy is going to play significant snaps for us if he remains healthy (IMO).

That was in the 3-4 where he is a perfect fit. Unfortunately for him he is now miscast in our Defense again. He is a quality veteran depth guy 2023, but I can’t see him being back in 2024.

I’d hope to trade him for a 6th round pick before the deadline, send him to a team like Chargers or Broncos if they are good. win-win-win for everybody

I have no idea what that means. Then again, back in my day. Boys had a penis and girls had a vagina.
