I know Many Like Kancey I don't But Have a WHY Question

We still play a 3-4 defense. They changed to a more ‘heavy’ 4 down approach but Dan said they still based their defense off of “odd man fronts”.

They just put one of the “3-4 LB” hands in the dirt.

“Play more behind the LOS” was one of Dan’s quotes. “A little heavier” was another quote.

This was a big topic last season and maybe I misunderstood the changes. But I’m almost certain that we still run our base out of odd-man fronts.

I disagree with Charles Harris not being a fit. I feel like James Houston is being overrated a bit, and Paschal and ‘Da Problem’ are going to be fighting with Harris for snaps this season.

Since we have an older board, maybe we should have a special Old Man OTT? Ya know, where we talk about old man things, like how many times you had to get up during the night to pee, and do you let the hair grow out of your ear or do you trim it? I’m a trimmer myself. That stuff is nasty.

Then why was he so great in 2021 and nada last year?

There’s your answer. Chuck is a 3-4 SOLB 2 pt stance player. Not a hand in the dirt DE

“On Monday, the team announced Charles Harris has been placed on injured reserve. He had been dealing with a nagging groin injury for the better part of two months.”

-Justin Rogers-

Ironically, right after this our defense actually took off and played decent.

What about the previous 4 years before he came here in 2021 where he was miscast as a DE?

We announced our defensive change on Tuesday March 1, 2022. That’s the day Dan came out and said “we are changing up our defensive scheme a bit”…

It was 3 weeks later, on March 18th, that we announced the resigning of Charles Harries to a 2 year extension.

I guess Brad and Dan thought Charles was a good fit in their defense…or it was a terrible decision by them to give him $7 million guaranteed to ‘not fit’ in this defense anymore.

I wouldn’t say it was a bad decision. We resigned him in 2022. We had to get rid of Flowers. We weren’t likely to get Aidan Hutch at that time. Romeo had an ACL injury.

It was necessary. In fact, I’ve been a big propotent of keeping Chuck anyways even with our depth and scheme change this past offseason when everyone else wanted them gone.

Quality depth is how you win in this league.

Kanceys arms do scare the crap out of me, but undeniably the dude had great production in college

Kancey, even if hes graded too highly does fit one of the biggest needs on the line, interior pass rush, which we are sorely lacking, though as many said, his Run D is incredibly suspect, and he should be a second rounder by all metrics, yet cause of how weak the top of the class is, hes considered a 1st as is rn.

Basically, he fits the need better than AA, who is a more porject based pick, and i do kinda think it boils down to if we need the firepower to compete now, or they think we are a year out pretty much.

I think both of your points have a lot of merits….

After the 2021 season where they finished 3-5-1 overall, but 3-2-1 with Goff at QB, they tried to hold onto any defensive pieces they had given their cap position. I remember reading around this time last year, that “we’d incorporate more 4 man DL looks…”.

My gut says that they didn’t expect AG to abandon the 3-4 to the level he did once Dorsey left…. When Levi couldn’t play, and our secondary thinned out miserably with injuries, it started to become obvious that are secondary play and scheme both needed looked at. They let AP go, benched Parker and AO, got Jacobs back, and it helped, but they also ran more 3-4 to get Houston snaps…. It worked…

I wouldn’t be shocked to see a more equitable 3-4 vs the 4-2-5 split this year…

I think that a rotation of Comish, Buggs, Paschal, McNeill, B Jones- plus 1 is sufficient for 3 DL sets. In those instance you spell Hutch with Romeo… and rotate C Harris and Houston opposite at SLB-

In the 4-2 sets you have C Harris as an injury replacement Edge 5?

They were going to pay Harris 8m and Romeo 14.5…. Or pay the 4M and 7M dead caps to cut them outright….

Getting them for 5M each this year and 5.5M voided dead cap next year was genius…. It’s cost us 4.5M more to have both than cut both!!! Since they account for two roster spots…. Assume we’d have to replace them with league minimum guys…. SO REALLY THEY COST 2.5M COMBINED MORE THAN 2 UDFA!!!

So I doubt their salaries factor into plays. I do however think Hutch, Harris and Houston are our top 3 edge rushers in a 3-4…. Hutch, Romeo, and Comish are our top 3 Edge players in a 4-3….

I think at 285 Paschal could play 3, 4, or 5T- spelling Comish, injury insurance, possible 50% snap share with Biggs?

  • I think it’s time to sign Q Jefferson or Worley cheap for the 2nd half?

LOL.
Literally had the ear discussion with the girl who has cut my hair the last decade, her husband is now at that point and doesn’t know how to deal with it.

Simple, have her cut it.

Huh?

I think he meant Dom Capers. Dorsey didnt leave… nor did he have that kind of defensive impact

Not actually telling you to shut up of course. Just can never resist to reference a movie shot in Oregon.

To me Kyler isn’t the same sort of outlier for the simple fact that his frame is squatty and thick, while Young’s is thin and slight. I know he got over that 200 threshold at the combine, but that’s fake weight. That’s ice cream weight. He’s gonna play at a slight 190 his whole career.

The only guy I can think of who had anything like his kind of thin frame to have any NFL success was Fran Tarkenton, and even he was 2 inches taller. Young is truly a 1 of 1 to me.

To me Ed Oliver is a closer physical comp to Kancey than anyone is to Young. He’s basically the same height and weight but his arms are an inch longer. They’re both in historical outlier territory, and I also agree with you that Oliver has been a disappointment. But if he’d been drafted in the 2nd I think the ROI would be fine, and that’s where I would put Kancey too.

Well said ^

I woulda took Ed Oliver that draft. Wanted Josh Allen he got snatched right before us

And i wouldnt take ed oliver in the first 2 rounds in a redraft. Ed Oliver sucks.
AND Saying he only has 1 inch shorter arms (1.15" shorter) is like saying his penis is only 1 inch shorter than a guy with a 2 inch penis… totally useless

And again kancey didnt play against 1 single starting level pro og that i have been able to identify

Kancey: 2019- big fat 0 .

2020: 27 Tackles , 7 TFL 1.5 sacks , 4 QBH, 2 PBU

2021: 35 Tackles , 13 TFL 7 sacks , 2 QBH , 1 PBU

2022: 11 G , 31 Tackles 7.5 sacks , 10 QBH, 0 PBU

Career: 37 G 93 Tackles , 34.5 TFL, 16 sacks , 16 QBH , 3 PBU’s

So you’re saying you Kancey what the big deal is?

Yote, you’ve got to go with what you see. The two are built very differently. One you look at and go that’s a trim DT and the other you go that’s a tweener that may suffer the fate of most tweeners. Kancey played DT all the time. He has some time at end, but he put up his numbers inside. AA was the polar opposite of that. AA was an EDGE, who occasionally did what we need him to do (DT) and btw when he did, he wasn’t nearly as effective as Kancey was. If I needed a 5t in a 3-4, I’d be looking at him in the mid to late 2nd round. If I need a 3t, I’m crossing him off my list.

I am willing to stick my neck out for the size deficiencies of Kancey. Because I see him against big future NFL interior Olinemen and winning against them a lot. He too gets engulfed, and stoned in the run game at times, but he has a special ability to disengage and then go make or be part of the tackle others would not make. This is where I acknowledge the size, and see why he isn’t a top 5 guy, but I don’t do as some do and remove them from their board because no T-Rex arms so short ever ever. If they pull the trigger at 18, I’m good with it. Could they trade down a little for an extra bean and make me even happier? Yes, but the guy has special traits and he will flat beat NFL olineman a lot IMHO.

AA had an amazing combine but I don’t see it from him inside at all on tape. So much comes down to reaction time and that’s harder to see in the numbers. Put the tape on and watch the snaps of AA on tape when he does play inside, then do the same with Kancey. Your eyes will tell you that for which you seek! Unless you are trying to upgrade what Paschel is for us. But I like Paschel’s strength, violent hands and explosion when he does reduce inside better than what I see on tape from AA. If you are looking for an explosive 3t that can pressure from the A gaps, and hit on twists and stunts, Kancey is a great candidate. For our rotation where we have guys like Alim, Buggs and Jones when we need the beef, I think he’d be a great weapon for us.
