Jared Goff # thoughts

That’s fairly accurate and funny too.

the defense sucked, the offense did not suck. They had a top 5 offense during the losing streak. His numbers are what they would have been…

how often did he refuse to throw to the check down? LOOOOVE him but it’s true…

This…

When you are giving up a lot of points and losing, often you are putting up offensive numbers too. We could have a better offense in 2023 and not be better statistically. I’m not expecting some huge jump from Goff because our team is better.

It’s really odd that people tunnel focus in on little things. We were 5th in ypg last year, we got better! So we should easily be top 3 in 2023!

Reality is that the better our defense is, the “weaker” our offense is going to be. Have more balance on offense/defense with a QB like Goff will result in more wins. Goff and the rest of the offense isn’t good enough to overcome a weak defense.

And just so I don’t get a a bunch of Goffer’s panties in a bunch, not many QBs can overcome a suspect defense.

Goff has had a ton of suspect defenses in his career. One of his underrated capabilities is to adapt to the type of game and greater season. Whether it’s a defensive grind or a wild west shootout, Goff will adapt. He can also adapt to which of his teammates is having success. RB, WRs, whatever. That’s one of his best traits and we saw some of that last year.

in 2020, the Rams had the #1 overall defense. The rams offense focused on time of possession and had long methodical drives. This helped keep the defense off the field and fresh and statistically awesome when they wouldn’t have been #1 overall with a spread offense.

Last year were were the #11 rushing offense and #8 passing.

There were 3 teams in the NFL last season that were top 11 in both categories.

Buffalo - 7 run 7 pass
Philly - 5 run 9 pass

Now when you account for the fact that 25% of Philly & Buffalo’s rushing attack were QB runs you see that Detroit was one of the balanced offenses in the league.

People point at his first year on the Lions and my argument is you could have put the greatest QB of all time on that team and they still weren’t t going to be successful. Goff handled the situation in world class fashion.

Do you have any evidence of this assertion or is this all speculation? It would probably be helpful to look at possessions and TOP. Let’s look at the top offenses of all time and see how that correlates to their defensive ranking

2018 Broncos - 8th ranked defense
1967 Raiders - 2nd
2018 Rams - 20th
2012 patriots - 9th
1994 49ers - 6th
1984 Dolphins - 7th
1990 Bills - 6th
1983 Redskins - 11th
2011 Saints - 13th
2016 Falcons 27th
1998 Vikings 6th
2011 Packers 19th
2018 Chiefs 24th
2007 patriots 4th
1999 Rams 4th
2013 Broncos 22nd

9 out ot 16 are top ten defenses and three are bottom ten. The total average is 11.75. It seems that more often than not the top offenses have top defenses too.

It’s reasonable to assume that a QB and offense can feel more confident and attack more when they have confidence in their defense

Ironically you say Goff isn’t good enough to overcome a bad defense but the 2018 defense was one of the poor statistical outliers skewing the average

In fact the three top-five offenses Goff has led,
their respective defenses were 12th, 20th and 28th. Seems also more often than not Goff does in fact overcome poor defenses

Seriously though who cares at all how a QB handles losing? Not something that is impressive in any way shape or form IMO.

good defenses tend to get the ball back the offense quicker….
whether it is 3-and-outs or turnovers.

The 2006 Bears are a great example.

The defense was top 3 in almost every category…
and forced 44 turnovers to lead the NFL.

The offense with Rex Grossman wasn’t particularly good…
gaing the 15th most yards…
but still scored the 2nd most points that season!

Yeah I don’t agree with this quote. Has he elevated his game before? Yes…everyone does from time to time. Sam Darnold has some monster games in his career. But it is not the norm or in Goffs comfort zone to put a team on his back in a shootout. If Goff was viewed as that kind of QB, he is among the best in the game. It’s the reason he’s not…

Queue the Chiefs game comments now…

How people handle setbacks is a good measure of character, which is why I understand you may not consider it.

Was that a shot at my character? You are saying that I have poor character? Really?

Do we even interact…like ever? Talk about a display of poor character.

Did I say it or did you just infer it?

So you are gonna go that route…you are telling me this is not a direct shot at my character based off of literally nothing other than I didn’t like your take.

Ok bro :+1:t2:

True, but is it really necessary to take a shot? It’s kinda contradictory to what you are promoting.

Saying you could have the greatest qb of all time and he wouldn’t have had better success is a huge exaggeration.

Cute. If you are gonna take a shot own it…

Goff also outdueled Aaron Rodgers in 2018…
and Tom Brady with Bucs in 2020…
and nearly led a great comeback on the road against Josh Allen…
in 2020… in one of those west coast teams forced to play 1pm games.

Then why isn’t Goff considered among the best QBs in the NFL currently? If he is this guy you are describing…what exactly holds him back from being one of the top franchise QBs in football?

Is he just the most unfairly criticized player in sports history?

I don’t think he is a tier 1 franchise guy at this time…
but he is pretty dang good when his O line is good.

I think he was unfairly criticized for the turnovers with Rams… other guys like Josh Allen have been turning it over a bunch and don’t get nearly the criticism.

In 2019… the Rams lost 2 good starters from 2018 (Sullivan & Saffold)… and only 2 of the 2019 starters played 63% or more of the snaps. Gurley also fell off a cliff… so that didn’t help.

In 2020… Big Whit was injured for 8 games and the line really struggled on the iOL as well.

I think we all agree the Lions in 2021 presented a whole slew of challenges for any QB…. but Goff did play better once the play calling changed and he recovered from that oblique strain.

In 2017, 2018, and 2022…. with good O line play…. he played like a pretty dang good QB.
