Jared Goff # thoughts

Totally flawed, I accept.

It’s just so weird why Goff hasn’t gotten his extension yet. Why on earth would one of the best in the game not get locked up before his price tag sky rockets? Baffling…

I am always interested in an informative discussion. You gave your opinion. There was nothing to learn……just that you disagree and believe w more defensive stops a risk adverse qb in a run focus offense would suddenly outdo what he has ever done even in his best year……what you verbalized what was already known and stated all you did was say you disagreed and think he gets more points……

Because he’s under contract for the next two years.

Not to mention Joe sucks as an OC and has somehow managed to get fired from 2 jobs w insane talent at the qb and other skilled positions

If he’s that good you extend him. You don’t extend him if you have doubts or may think a better opportunity could arise in the next two years.

Is that wrong?

It makes no sense to extend him now. Goff very well could be here…….in fact it is very likely. Air has a really good read on Goff, I’d pay attention when he talks on that topic.

I agree that it makes no sense to extend Goff now. That has been my stance all along. The reason it doesn’t make sense is because he isn’t a slam dunk franchise guy. If he was, he would be committed to long term before he demands more after let’s say…a playoff win…

And to your point, let’s not forget fans can vote for him 20 billion times, it still only counts as 1/3. The other 2/3 are from players and coaches. So whoever it is that is not considering him “among the best” - it’s not the people coaching with / against him or players playing with / against him.

Not trying to win dude. I just think QB play now in general is as good as it’s ever been. For a array of reasons.

I will admit it is deeper…but the top talent is at an all-time low imo. When you can literally interchange QB4-10 or QB11-20 because the talent level is that close, there’s a lack of elite level QBs. Someone could literally name 6-8 QBs they feel are better than Goff in the same tier. It comes down to bias at that point.

Cousins might be QB12 at the moment with Goff being QB7. It’s also completely valid to feel that Cousins is every bit as good or better than Jared Goff.

The other reason a team would extend early would be to get cap relief. But they did a good job of navigating that already

It’s possible we still see an extension after the draft, if they still feel Goff is the guy, to keep his next contract ask down. As the cap rises, so do new QB contracts and the cap is expected to rise the next several years

Let’s say they tack on three years through 2027 and a cap number of 37 million. At the point of our SB contention window with Goff of 2024-2027 he’s at 10-15% of the cap that historically has been a sweet spot for teams going to and winning the SB

Then we trade up to get a toolsy QB in 2025 to take over in 2028 when Goff is 33. And after we have our team built up. Now that’s the Chiefs model

I think the rule changes have skewed things in the favor of offenses… and the QBs on the whole are much more athletic now… so the stats are better than ever.

I would also point out that the offensive design has advanced along with the rules that limit contact on WRs… so that is a huge advantage for QBs to have great stats.

I also think that high school teams throw the ball more than ever… and college offenses use spread offense that are slowly being utilized in the NFL… so the young guys may not have as big of a learning curve now.

This is why statistics are really bad to compare at the QB position from past seasons. If you go back 5 years, it’s literally not comparable.

Yes that’s wrong.

Teams do not do this…. For obvious reasons.

There have been reasons given for not extending that benefit the team salary cap wise or QB salary wise long term iirc, I think it was @DeadStroke or possibly @Air2theThrown that discussed some time back.

Yeah this whole thing has been discussed to exhaustion and it’s never gonna stop lol. I have done a good job (IMO :joy:) of staying out of it lately.

And I’m with them in the reasons why not to. I am playing the other side of it’s not obvious Jared Goff is their guy in the future. A coach saying to the media that their current guy is their guy is just standard. I mean what is he supposed to say?

This summer would be the earliest that most teams consider extensions for elite QB’s (i.e. Burrow is probably discussing an extension right now and he has two years left).

  • CJ was extended when he was entering the final year of his rookie contract.
  • Stafford was extended in 08/29/2013 right before the season started (two seasons left on his rookie contract) and again in 2017 when he was entering his final season.
  • Frank Ragnow was extended in May of the final year of his rookie contract (with 5th year option picked up)
  • Suh was extended . . . oh yea, we ■■■■■■ that up.

Anything before the draft is probably too early . . . get your ducks in a row with the draft and then worry about an extension.

Doesn’t really matter if its this year or next or if we play the franchise tag game, I’d have Jarred be the driving force behind getting an extension done.

Yep.
And on the flip side, great offenses keep average defenses off the field. When a defense is off the field, they are giving up no yards and no points.
