Only thing I can think of (somebody reality check my bullshit if I’m out in left field)–any chance they are rolling with less than 53 (maybe a claim or two) knowing they have Alim/Paschal back at some point and avoiding guaranteed salaries for players they will most likely cut down the line? I think salaries are fully guaranteed if they’re on the Week 1 roster right? That’s the only thing that is coming to my mind.

Yeah, but you can still have 53 people on the roster for week 1, then release a couple of guys and bring in the other vets. You’d just cut the younger guys that you know you can get through, like a Cooper.
Then he couldn’t come back this year I believe.
Because now he won’t count against the 8 returns we get for the year.
When Alim / Paschal come back they’ll probably waive someone like Lovett or by then someone else might be injured.
Either way he was a 6th round pick…and just like project James Houston 6th round pick … was waived his first year.
No biggie.

Additionally he noted that we have previously done this with morice Norris and cj Moore bringing both back after waiving with injury settlement.
I get that, but just wondering if it’s a money move by the Lions to avoid paying a fully guaranteed salary to players they most likely cut down the line. But again, I’m just throwing darts at a board.
Probably won’t be much more ‘news’ until waiver claims are processed tomorrow.
I wonder if it’s a “the standard is the standard” sort of move.
These are some significant hoops to go through to prevent using an ir return slot, but given what we experienced last year who knows

Interesting we had all them UDFA and nobody stepped up and grabbed that last spot in the secondary.
