They typically only keep 9 OL on the 53 man. Maybe 10.
Last year was an anomaly because they had 3 experiments on the roster (sorsdal, Manu and Mahogany)
Manu replaces skipper,
Mahogany takes a starter job.
Sorsdal says a versatile backup. Jack of all trades master of none.
Neise is a free cheap player (ERFA)
Right there is 8.
With 1 OT, 1 IOL and 1 G/OT.
So they may sign 1-2 more. But if they draft one, or get a better player than Glasgow. They will get a spot over Skip.
Davis will get a multi year contract and I’m not convinced we will give him one. This is Davis last big contract so he’s going to want to get paid.
His 2022 contract was 3 years at 45 mil. So this new one should be north of that.
What I find odd is that we gave up a 3rd round pick for him and made no attempt to extend him. Thats a lot to give up for a one year rental. I’m surprised we let him play a year, build up his stock and will let him test FA …… which my gut tells me that means he won’t be back.
I do not think the Lions will be aggressive this FA. They will be more about keeping their own guys. Which means they could be looking to receive more comp picks this year. Davis could be in the comp pick plan.
I agree that Davis was apart of the comp pick situation. And also the knowledge of AG leaving this year. He was really just an essential piece for what Glenn wanted to run. Another DC may not require such a heavy investment and it’s better to asses thst once he’s hired,
I agree davis gets a huge contract. He deserves it.
I’m not disagreeing at all, but the Lions have a ton of cap space. I didn’t think they’d go get DJ Reader last offseason either. If there is value in the FA market, I think BH will be open to a short term deal with someone who can fill a position of need. Again not saying they’re going to target a big name or anything, and they won’t give out a long term deal, but with BH that one or two year deal for a vet who’s market isn’t quite what it was expected to be? Wouldn’t surprise me.
I agree with both of you.
I don’t think Holmes will be aggressive in free agency.
All that cap space will be used for early extensions to Hutch, Kerby (Maybe even Jamo), and select lesser re-signings (possibly Barnes if scheme of new DC is similar or incorporates SamLB) as well as leaving room for carryover for the cap tsunami that is coming in 2026.
Reader and that type of short term contract is a BH special.
I don’t think that is being aggressive.
Glassgow, Reader, Zeitler, Davenport type signings are where Holmes does most of his free agent work.
I anticipate a vet CB signing like a Stephon Gilmore to compete with Rake and Amik for the starting outside position held by CD3. Holmes knows he will need a vet CB capable of starting in case Rake struggles.
Holmes will probably bring in a vet safety as well if Iffy isn’t re-signed.
I don’t want to enter the season with Glasgow as a starter anywhere. Mahogs at LG and Zeitler at RG with GG the backup IOL. We have the money to pay Zeitler on a 1 year deal. If he is too expensive I’d rather try Sorsdal at RG before GG.
I mean, I’d probably be fine with Glasgow at RG. He’s been much better there throughout his career and playing between Ragnow and Sewell makes life easier for any RG we put there.
But under no circumstance can he be the starting LG. He’s just not good there. One of the reasons he came back was he happy about being able to play on the right side. His struggles on the left are well known, which is why while most of us were pretty happy when Zeitler signed last season, quite a few of us were kind of scratching our heads, too, since Zeitler can only play RG.
I don’t believe Zeitler will be back. My understanding is that Mahongy was drafted to replace him and IMO he is ready to take over. Ayode is who i have been watching and he appears to have gotten better. I suspect that Holmes will add competition to the IOL this offseason though i have no guess on who that might be. Also they did get back Muti who looked good before the shoulder injury.
