I wondered when someone was gonna call me out on those…
Yeah, he presents a lot more than quicks.
End of round 6 looks good for these boys
Actually I like Iowa State OT at 196, right where Miller has him, 196. Jalen Travis, OT, Iowa State (60).
I think Brad is 100% taking into account the relative values of players though. He might love somebody at 60 but not at 32. He might like a combo of players at 32/60 better than another combo and be willing to pass on the higher rater player at 32 because the 2nd best player is so close and overall the combo could be more attractive aka choosing between two players he loves in Tyler Booker and Mykel Williams but he knows the drop off from Booker to the next player he could get at say 60 or 102 is farther off than Williams to say JTT or Swinson or somebody in the third.
I also do believe Brad hits position groups. We saw him hit defensive tackles in consecutive picks in 2021 and cornerbacks in consecutive picks in 2024. Those just happen to be positions of needs so I doubt its just a coincidence.
Oh for sure, I didn’t mean to imply he wasn’t. Players, though, not positions.
And I actually think him doubling up is an example of him going BPA over need. After he made the 1st pick at the position the need lessened considerably against other spots. Many thought Rakestraw was overkill last year after drafting Terrion and adding Amik and Davis, while a lot of people thought that of Alim too (mostly because they were dying for a WR). And don’t forget Paschal after drafting Hutch. People really wanted us to go LB there.
And 2023 stands as a true masterpiece of player over position. Many were clamoring for us to draft Bijan early in the process, but that died down drastically once we gave Monty the big contract. The vast majority of us were either on CB like Witherspoon, Gonzalez, Branch or Porter, edge like Nolan Smith (who I believe was our pick in the board mock), or - and I think this was the case for most people - Jalen Carter the DT. Actually, yeah, here’s the result of our poll that year.
Well you know the rest. We ended up with Branch, but at 50-something instead of 18 where he was most often mocked. Then RB, LB, TE. Needs, for sure, but not needs anyone thought we would be drafting early, which is pretty easy to see when you go back and look.
But yes, big picture I think they all ask themselves something like, “would you rather have Harmon and Oladejo or Ezeiruaku and JT Sanders?” Those sorts of comparative combos. But they don’t have to only include DTs, edges, and OL.
I haven’t paid attention to this like I used to. Really not caring like the Millen days, Brad will make some good moves.
But I keep finding myself really wanting Jonah Savaiinaea!
Any chance that dude lasts to the 3rd?
I have him penciled in as our 2nd, but if JT Tui is there, I can’t pass him up.
I’m not so sure on that. I forgot about Paschal. What a coincidence three out of four years if so. I don’t think he’ll do it if he thinks its a big reach. But it seems to be part of his strategy if the need is big enough.
That is sort of where I’m at with the top two picks. Sure, Holmes could get enamored with God knows who. Egbuka? Golden? Maybe he falls in love with Starks or decides to get a LT like Simmons. But I think there are enough really good OGs, DTs, and DEs that its a pretty solid bet this close to a super bowl he’ll get two of those position groups. And why I was making the point mostly. It can really help to know not only who you like but where guys will fall on the board. Believing you’ll get one of the four guards (and you love them all) can really set up the rest of the draft (as an example, not that I think its the right move but its just one where I can sort of predict to some degree that a DE I like will be there at 60).
I think the OG pool runs out really fast this year, like if you don’t grab one in the top 3 picks you may need to pass.
I remember being scolded on this board when I said our offense needed some juice and suggested a TE like Musgrave, a RB like Achane. I was told the Lions don’t value TEs and Brock Wright was just fine. Brad won’t draft a RB early because you can get them in the 4th round or later. I agree it was not a popular opinion to think we should draft a TE or a RB early.
It definitely wasn’t. People want to act like they were obvious needs after the fact, but that wasn’t the reality on here before the draft.
I honestly just think he’s playing his board. Rakestraw was someone often mocked in the 1st, everyone was pretty surprised he was available that late. In fact Brad said as much. DIdn’t expect to draft 2 corners but we play our board.
Paschal was for sure a guy we targeted for his inside-outside versatility, but don’t forget in between those two edges he traded up for an injured WR, a move NO ONE saw coming. He marches to his own beat, and I honestly think we could see damn near anything from him. Including something like S-WR-LB with our first 3 picks.
I could be mistaken but I’m thinking one of those first 3 picks will be for a DE.
I would be very surprised if it wasn’t, I’m just saying I wouldn’t put anything past him.
Maybe he decides to spam DL on day 3 like the Packers do. If he came out of the draft with like, Roberts/TID, Joyner/Diggs, and Oliver, I think we could have a really good DL.
Or maybe he decides he wants to keep his options open for next year’s potentially loaded edge class. Would suuuuuck to pass on TJ Parker because we want to give this year’s lesser prospect more time.
Or maybe he’s just much more comfortable with what we have now than everyone on here.
I mean that’s why I think other teams have no idea what BH is gonna do. I mean he doesn’t have a pattern except for he does tend to double up on a certain position. Even that’s hard to gauge.
Right, I think it’s best to say he’s not afraid to double up on positions. I don’t think it’s necessarily the strategy, but it’s not NOT the strategy either, if the next highest player on the board happens to play one that’s already been drafted. I mean techinically he drafted THREE edges in 2022, Hutch, Paschal and Houston.
It’s hard to figure out what Brad will do. For this years draft when I try to decipher what he is thinking I just follow the money he has spent to fill positions. I could be wrong but I don’t think Brad is trying to cut guys who he just paid guaranteed money to. The more money he paid them the less likely he will be trying to replace them. I’m sure other things can happen that are unexpected but I think you can see what his intentions are. That is my theory anyhow.
Never a bad idea to follow the money, and probably pretty telling overall. But I don’t think it eliminates any possibilities either. Just another piece of info.
Honestly I wouldn’t feel comfortable writing off any position. @CuriousHusker and I argued for Brock Bowers last year despite LaPorta’s emergence, we could have gotten super creative with those two guys, and now it looks like Bowers will be a superstar. We definitely could have figured out a way to use him. And if a talent to the level of Barry was available for us at RB, I’d take him too. It’s always been about players for me, and I think that’s the way the best GMs operate too.
