They won 60 games last year without one. The lineup is essentially equal, itâs just younger with improved shooting/floor spacing but worse defense.
Iâve said this many times that ultimately the Pistons championship contention ceiling will almost be entirely tied to the development of Cade, Ausar and Duren. Thatâs their core with shuffled pieces around those three. The big splash from outside isnât likely to happen, I just donât see Langdon as that type of GM. I wouldnât write the obituary on this Pistons team yet but it will heavily depend on the Core 3 continuing to improve.

The Pistons are around $57M shy of the first cap apron. The Huerter and Green contracts havenât been added on Spotrac yet, so thatâs about another $12M to account for that I already took off.
They have two trade exceptions (one $15M and one $5.2M) from the recent six-team deal. True, you canât trade trade exceptions, but they do allow you to take back more in salary than you give out. The other team doesnât gain anything except getting rid of a contract and freeing up cap space and acquiring picks, but thatâs something appealing in many instances, so in essence it can be an asset that can facilitate a trade with a team looking to get under the tax threshold or one of the aprons or just freeing up cap space for another move.
In essence, the Pistons can trade picks, maybe include Holland ($9M), Duncan Robinson ($15.9M), expiring contracts like Harris and/or Prince (both $3.815M) and use trade exceptions to still make a fairly major trade work.
They could be saying to Duren, âHey, if you re-sign with us at a discount, we can afford to put another major piece next to you in the frontcourt.â
Kevin Durantâs cap hit is $43.9M. Given his age (soon to be 38), I canât imagine Houston asking for huge draft pick compensation. His contract has 2 years left.

From a cap perspective, Duncan Robinson, Gary Harris and picks would allow for a Durant trade, using both trade exceptions. Houston gets a rotation piece in Robinson, an expiring contract, picks and cap relief.
Iâm somewhat torn on KD because his personality is a bit of a turn off, but when healthy heâs the true #2 they need next to Cade. They can also manage his minutes with Collins.

Edit â never mind - I guess the key word is âhard-cappedâ. Weâre below and cannot go above no matter what.
thatâs $28.7M. My understanding is you canât use trade exceptions on top of that. But Trey Murphyâs base is only $27M, no? So Murphy is still possible, probably with three first rounders and a pick swap? Also donât we have to wait two months before trading Harris/Prince?
Donât see how we could do Durant ($44M) now⌠that seems impossible. The trade exception is only there for a player up to that amount - you canât combine it with other assets to get matching salaries. The only possible wy to get Durant would be for JD, which likely is not on the table.

Well I donât see it as a bad thing. In fact you and your rants are responsible for some of my hardest laughs while reading this board.
Just remember that you canât control any of it. We are all just along for the ride.
I donât think Murphy is happening or Durant. They would have happened BEFORE the Joe signing. They tried to get Murphy and then pivoted to Joe. I actually like how the FO is handling everything. They are offering a limited Duren a very fair and âwe value youâ contract without overpaying out of fear. They looked at big game hunting and decided the prices were too high and would hamstring their future. They had a tempered response to a weak FA class overall and got better at spacing, shooting and put themselves in a position where they are not desperate regarding Duren and whatever he decides. I like it.
