Project Hail Mary

Mortal Kombat wasn’t brilliant writing, but it was fun.

We watched Project Hail Mary the other night, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I tend to pick the story apart as to why its not really believable…and there were a lot of holes in the story, but still a cute movie and it kept my attention for 2.5 hours.

I watched it last night. It wasn’t the best movie I’ve ever seen but I did like it alot.

Made me feel like maybe there is a place in this universe for us oddballs after all.

There is…it’s called The Den. The sports island of misfit toys.

Went to see it last night. I thought the storyline was good, but there were some corny parts that detracted from the movie. It was caught somewhere in the middle of drama, thriller and kids movie/comedy. @Nate it was highly entertaining, but in my opinion far from a masterpiece.

As is normally the case, the book is much better about this, but they tend to dumb everything down for mass releases (they dumbed The Martian down so much from the book I actually got irritated, it made certain aspects not make sense).

I didn’t underatand why a middle school teacher was saught out to figure this out…and could, but the best scientists in the world had not a clue.
And that the martians were obviously far more advanced than us but couldn’t figure it out on their own or understand radiation?!?!?!

But its a movie so things rarely make total sense.

I don’t know how the movie handled it yet, haven’t seen it, but in the book he WAS actually an expert who produced a controversial paper, got shunned/mocked by the scientific community such that middle school teacher was the best job he could get… then eventually got proved right. (This also made him expendable, and if I remember it right the lady in charge was cutthroat af, though again I don’t know if that carries over to the movie). I think he was also in the exact field needed or that they lacked, some sort of biology

That was in the movie.

My wife, who is a PhD scientist, had the same hang up.

Yeah, something like he wrote something about how the world could exist without water (or something like that) and later in space he realized his paper was wrong.

This is where it helps to be “Not very smart”. I get to just believe it all. LOL

the book explains why they didn’t understand radiation a lot better. their home planet was a ‘large’ earth, bigger radiation field. basically nothing would really reach the surface so without radiation coming down they had no reason to understand it at all. They mention in the book that until they made the trip to tau they had never even left orbit because they were ‘blind’. everything in that race was sound based, sonar, etc. They didn’t know there were stars or anything ‘above’ until they had to.

which is why books like this, which is really good, should be a miniseries. I’d much rather a 6 or 8 episode series of hail mary be made that would go more into depth on his travels.

Like @Snags I tend to break movies down. My issue is that I tend to not to sit back and enjoy a story because I’m constantly WTFing throughout the whole damn thing. It finally came out to rent/buy on cable so I went ahead and bought it due to @Nate bringing it to my attention and the reviews by our fellow Denmates…so that helped my mindset.

What a great show. Rocky for the win! I’m an analytical guy on many things, but I also know that culture is real, how we well mesh with others is real…regardless of how different we are. Use each others Super Powers for the win. Yeah Rocky is definitely an MCDC guy!

I love troubleshooting. I typically am a work the problem, don’t be the problem type of guy, so this was right up my alley as far as that goes.

I really liked the German lady. To me she represents sacrifice for the greater good, brutal, but honest. As a Veteran on the heels of Memorial Day she just resonated with me.

You know what, I’m going to go watch her sing…again :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

3/5.

I thought the premise was kinda silly. The execution even sillier. If you like your sci-fi cute, then this movie is for you. If you want one that actually tugs on your heart strings, just watch INTERSTELLAR. And even that movie isn’t perfect.

The first time I watched Interstellar I wasn’t a fan. I rewatched it a couple of months ago and liked it better. The ending was a little weird. I get it, but it was a little weird. The author must’ve took some massive bong hits to come up with that one.
