Free Agency always goes this way tho. Idk why anyone is surprised. āBut next years class is betterā
The UFAs within a year
75-80% of them will resign or get traded before UFA starts. So take a look of that class next year ~40 high level FAs. So more than likely only 8-10 will be available july 1st 2026.
So what does that mean? TRADES!
Again. Steve has made 1 meaningful trade in 7 YEARS!
Look at every other team in the NHL. Much better trades. I get 7 years the assets were bare. Now the wings have TOO MANY.
Yeah Iām looking, after yesterday a total of like 3 out of 32 teams feel like their teams got better. Everyone resigned where at, and terribly dry market.
The wings still have what, 17 million give or take to play with here. The DeBrincat trade happened 1-2 weeks after FA when that happened. Letās see what happens in the next couple of weeks.
And until Steve proves he can bring in a high-level FREE agent Iām not holding my breath. Iāve heard from multiple reports that people do not want to negotiate with Steve.
And why would a free agent want to come to Detroit? They have been a bad team for a very long time. They really donāt have anything to show that they are improving and like it or not they do have a higher tax rate than most states.
For 2026 wings only have
11 players Signed
5 Players that could be elevated
And 7 High level RFAs.
So they HAVE to make moves just to fill out a 23 man roster. Unless the plan is just to elevate everyone and sign all the RFAs and run a daycare center. Where only Larkin, Copp, Compher and Gibson are over 30. And only Ras and Kat only ones over 25. The other 17 guys are 20-24.
So sure they have space right now. But $12+m will be taken up by the RFAs.
Itās almost like they know the rest of the guys still need time to season, like Iāve stated numerous times in this thread. Literally none of them appear ready to come up. Theyāre not getting blocked, theyāre just not ready. You donāt bring up a guy like Danielson or ASP this early/young and give them minimal minutes in the NHL. Danielson needs at least an another year in the AHL. ASP needs more than 2 AHL games before coming to the NHL.
The guy most ready is probably Buchelnikov, but the whole KHL thing makes it tricky.
