Red wings offseason

This staff does not have a Jim Nil in their scouting department like Ken Holland and Scotty Bowman did.

Yes, and now it is considered one of the better systems in the NHL. Because of Steve Yzerman.

He certainly hasn’t hit huge like a Datsyuk in the 7th but that is pretty rare. However saying guys like Buchelnikov, Plante, Augustine, Soderblom, etc are “ugly” isn’t fair. The guys drafted later need even more work than the guys in the first round and most NHL first rounders need time to make it to and be successful in the NHL. I’d be really curious to see the average amount of players on current NHL rosters that were drafted by their current teams since 2019 before hitting Steve too hard here.

Hard disagree. Mason Appleton played nearly 45% of his ice time on the penalty kill for the Jets, who has the #13 PK in the league last year. While he’s not fully responsible for those numbers, you don’t spend that much time on the PK if you’re bad at it and if you do, your team probably isn’t #13 in PK. It’s more like the Wings being at the bottom.

This may be true, bit that might not even matter. Pro scouting only goes as far as the players you’re able to actually obtain. We all know no one above mediocre wants to come here in FA without a massive overpay, so you’re left with with overpaying for mediocre players in FA or attempting to trade - which isn’t easy. If they’re good, they’re going to have to be convinced to sign here long term, otherwise you’re giving up assets for nothing. And that doesn’t even touch having to get a trade secured in the first place.

I just recalled what PK stands for in the NHL, yea it’s been that long…lol

It’s okay, if you’ve watched any Wings games in the last few years, they’ve also forgotten what it stands for.

I have heard for the last four years that we have had “one of the best” farm systems in the NHL. If that’s the case, it’s time to see them on the main roster. That’s on Yzerman to make happen.

We will welcome all of you fair weather fans back on to the Red Wing’s bandwagon once they officially turn the corner.

Spoken as a fair weather fan that was welcomed with open arms to the Tigers once they turned the corner last year

Btw if larkin, Raymond, DeBrincat dont fall asleep wings could push for the playoffs

I guess I’ll be watching for development from the players then. I have 0 hope for the playoffs.

Yes it makes more sense to wait another year for development and more cap space etc.

But i just have no hope that Steve can bring in any pro talent to help this team. Unless they over pay or force a trade.

Btw vegas odds for the East.

1&2: +300 FLO, CAR
2&3: +800 TBL, NJD
4-8: +1500 TOR, WAS, OTT, NYR
9&10: +4000 NYI, MON
11-15: +5000 DET, PHI, BOS, CBJ, BUF
16: +10000 PIT

So as it stands. They are 11th in the east according to vegas and i absolutely believe those odds.

As for the Stanly cup odds.
Wings are only ahead of Boston, Buffalo and Pit in the east.

Either way. They are on the BACK end of the bubble. Again. For thr 4th year in a row.

Red wings to make the playoffs.
No -350
Yes +300

Basically a 25% chance

And im not convinced that steve is that great at drafting.
See Ottowa.

Their current 23 man.
Players drafted by the team currently on the 23.

2019 - 1
2020 - 4 plus 1 UDFA
2023 - 1 plus 1 UDFA.

So 9 players since 2019!

Wings only have 5. And the guys from 2020 are “still not ready to come up” ok what ever.

And Ottowa has been a bottom 5 team since 2018 (like the wings)
Yet they made the playoffs this year and have much better odds to make the playoffs. (Minus odds actually)

lmfao. Let’s take a look at this after I just went through every player who logged a game for Ottawa last season. I have no idea where you get your information. Probably just making shit up again to fit some dumbass narrative you have because literally none of it is correct. Here’s the facts: Ottawa only has one drafted player since 2021 to play for them and he contributed a whole 4 points in 64 games:

Let’s look at closer look at the drafted players playing for Ottawa since 2019 who actually played in games for them last season:

POS Name Age Year Acquired Overall Pick 24-25 GP Stats
F Shane Pinto 24 2019 32 70 37 pts
G Mads Sogaard 24 2019 37 2 .800 SV%, 5.24 GAA
D Jake Sanderson 22 2020 5 80 57 Pts, -14
F Tim Stutzle 23 2020 3 82 79 Pts
F Ridly Grieg 22 2020 28 78 34 Pts
D Tyler Kleven 23 2020 44 79 10 Pts, -11
G Leevi Merilainen 22 2020 71 12 .925 SV%, 1.99 GAA
F Cole Reinhardt 24 2020 181 17 2 Pts
F Zack Ostapchuk 21 2021 39 56 4 Pts

Wow. Amazing. They have two big contributors in Stutzle and Sanderson. (Raymond and Seider anyone?) Two average contributors in Pinto and Grieg (Edvinsson and Kasper - though Kasper is 4 years younger than Pinto and Edvinsson put up almost as many points playing D as Grieg did as a forward while being a year younger, but whatever, they suck because Wings drafted them lmfao). And a bunch of guys who didn’t do shit and a goalie that looks like they should probably get more time than 12 GP next season. And they don’t have a single UDFA who played a single game for them last year, this is a list of all their young guys who logged games and every single one of them was drafted by Ottawa or someone else:

There’s hardly any difference between those drafted players for Ottawa and the players playing for Detroit that they drafted, except for the fact that, you know, Detroit didn’t have 3 first round picks in 2020 like Ottawa did.

POS Name Age Year Acquired Overall Pick 24-25 GP Stats
F Marco Kasper 20 2022 8 77 37 pts
D Simon Edvinsson 21 2021 6 78 31 pts, +12
G Sebastian Cossa 22 2021 15 1 .857 GAA, 2.67 GAA
F Carter Mazur 22 2021 70 1 Died on 1st shift
F Lucas Raymond 22 2020 4 82 80 Pts
F Elmer Soderblom 23 2019 159 26 11 Pts
D Mortiz Seider 23 2019 6 82 46 Pts, -5
D Albert Johansson 24 2019 60 61 9 Pts, -11

AND it’s ■■■■■■■ Ottawa, not “Ottowa”.

CARTER MAZUR- Had high hopes for that guy. Hope he gets better.

The point is they have 2 UDFAs playing in a playoff game.

They have 2 players drafted in 2023 being called up to the team.

Are they all huge contributors? Absolutely not.

But at least are they getting NHL playtime? Absolutely.

Why hasnt wallender been called up?

Mauzer got hurt.
Buium and Cosa still in GR.
James and Buchelnikov still not up

Thats my point. Anyone can nail a top 10 draft pick. What about the rest?

If he was good good at drafting they would be up here OR soo good that other teams would be knocking on the door foe a trade.

If they are so bad that you have to sign guys like Appleton and JVR. Instead of bringing up a guy drafted 4+ years ago. Theres something wrong

Yea…you made some.good points. But the Wings are just so young. Hard to blame anyone until we see the development.

Wings kinda remind me of the Tigers from 3 years ago!

Their UDFAs that are on their roster are 26 and 29 years old. Highmore played a single playoff game for them and Matinpalo had 0 points in 6 games and logged the least amount of time of any defenseman (13:04) on their team. And they both only played 41 games a piece and logged barely over 11:00 minutes a game during the regular season combining for 3 goals, 10 points, -7 +/- in 82 games. These guys are old af compared to any of the Wings prospects and contribute jack shit to Ottawa.

It’s the summer. Just because ESPN or some random site lists them on their roster doesn’t mean they’re being “called up”. They’ve had exactly 1 player who has been drafted since 2021 play any games for them to a tune of 4 whole points and a -9 +/-. Awesome impact via the draft, I guess? Light years ahead of the Wings, somehow? Who at least have gotten decent contributions from both Edvinsson and Kasper.

No they aren’t? Again, the ONLY Ottawa player drafted since 2021 to see the NHL is Ostapchuck, who has a grand total of 4 points in 63 games.

The same reason no Ottawa player other than Ostapchuck has seen the NHL since 2021? Most players in the NHL draft are 17 or 18 when drafted and don’t end up seeing the NHL until 22-24. This is nothing new. It’s been like this for as long as I’ve watched hockey. And also, Wallinder WAS called up last year, he just didn’t play. So it’s not like he’s THAT far off and I would fully expect him to be competing for a spot sooner than later.

So your data point was to bring up Ottawa who is almost in the exact same position? Outside of their three 1st round picks in 2020, they have also had very little to no help from their draft picks.

I guess every team in the NHL is bad then, because this literally happens all the time. Outside of 1st round picks, it’s pretty rare to see guys mid-second round and later making the NHL in their early 20s.

Well, thank god Ottawa didn’t just sign a 36-year-old Lars Eller who had 22 points last year in 80 games last year. Or a 31-year-old Nick Cousins who had 15 points in 50 GP.

If the 32 Senators draft picks since 2021 are that bad that they have to sign guys like Eller and Cousins, instead of bringing up bringing up guys drafted 4+ years ago. There’s something wrong.

Crazy that the Senators 2021 Top 10 draft pick and now 22-year-old, Tyler Boucher, still hasn’t made the NHL and has had…let’s see…15 points in the last 2 years combined in the AHL? Yet, “anyone can nail a top 10 draft pick”. Except for, I guess, the example of the team you used to say is better than the Red Wings at drafting. For what it’s worth, our 2021 Top 10 pick (Edvinsson) already has 103 games in the NHL at 22 years old and is one of the few + defensemen on a very bad defensive team.

And the Wings prospects are not ‘so bad’. Actually, they’re pretty impressive across the board, but that doesn’t mean they’re ready for the NHL. I’d suggest reading Max Bultman’s near the end of the year prospect update if you haven’t already:

Good read on Red Wing prospects
Just wanted to add one thing.
Mats Sundin (ex Leaf all star from Sweden) was asked who is the best young Swedish prospect. ASP was his answer and it’s due to his edge work.
