My only thought process is.
Next year.

Many of the contracts fall off the books. And they will have a crap load more cap space.

I like the pick! Guy is gritty, has top end skill, plays with an edge, and is grateful.

Guaranteed another A plus Yzerman pick. Why are you guys saying 4 something years to contribute? Raymond did immediately, Kasper was what year 2 or 3, Danielson will be as well, Seider was what year 2.

Do you even know what position he plays? He’s a winger, the one position that statistically has the most likely window to crack the league earlier than any other position in hockey

Best case is hell be on the wings for the 2026 as a depth rotational guy. And mid 6 in 2027.

And hes the 13th pick .
Rated at 11-17 by most experts. And THOSE players typically spend 2 years in the minors.

Then 1 year as a part time.

THEN middle 6.

So im not expecting him up and full time till 2027-28

Newsflash, most guys in the NHL draft aren’t ready to hit the NHL for multiple years so who cares if it takes this guy the standard amount of time.

Why the ■■■■ is anyone flipping out or upset about this? Yzerman derangement syndrome.

Y’all need to chill out. No one in this draft was stepping in tomorrow and making the Wings better instantly.

I think my point was we need someone ready. I think this was the year Yzerman should’ve traded the pick. Having a guy not being ready in a few years does nothing to help the red wings at all.

Cool. Who’s the other GM willing to trade the NHL player who helps the Red Wings today for the #13 pick?

It takes two to tango. And my guess, is that no matter what Yzerman did/does, people are going to complain. If he traded the 13th pick for a guy, I’m sure that guy would’ve been underwhelming and he could’ve gotten a lot more.

I, on the other hand, and completely content with letting the Wings continue to build like the Lions, Pistons, and Tigers have done - through the draft and development of their own players, while nabbing a critical free agent or two along the way.

Cool and how do you know that Yzerman didnt try. Its find to build through the draft. But year 7 coming up he knows its playoffs or bust

I don’t - and neither do you. That’s the point. No one knows if he tried or if he didn’t. But I’m not the one bitching about making or not making a move, am I? As I said, I’m content to let the process play out. Yzerman took over a team that was in a worse position than most expansion teams are when they start. No talent in the NHL and no talent in the farm system and littered with bad contracts. We’re barely seeing our homegrown kids, with the exception of the best of the best, hit the NHL roster.

But by most accounts, Bear, who the Wings selected at 13, is almost unanimously considered a great pick there by the Wings by the people that know hockey. Strangely enough, it’s the exact type of player that people were bitching about not having in another thread (or maybe this thread) vs. someone like Mitch Marner (who I wouldn’t be opposed to getting anyways).

FWIW, Yzerman did his due diligence like I would’ve expected him to:

The Detroit Red Wings kept one of their biggest trade chips, the 13th pick in the draft, and didn’t make a move prior to Friday’s first round.
The fit just wasn’t there, general manager Steve Yzerman said.
“I talked to every team in the league; you have some conversations with some teams that are interested in our assets and vice versa,” Yzerman said. Friday after the first round. “And ultimately, at least up to tonight, haven’t found anything that was a fit for myself or anyone that I’ve been speaking with.”
