The Lamar Jackson saga is weird

Do you don’t think that’ll happen ? Or it’s ok if it happens as long as it’s the right player and it’s not the full salary ?

The $250 g is a problem because the salary cap which helps make it so no team goes 30 years without a playoff victory ? Or so the patriots don’t dominate a decade ? So the ravens can mostly lose in the playoffs no matter who is QB ?

If the players push through guaranteed salaries , the owners will adapt. Will this be bad for the game ? I don’t know but the smart teams win now.

I thought signing bonuses were guaranteed and the cap hit was just to spread out the hit. With Calvin I learned it wasn’t guaranteed

Agreed!

Tagging someone is not walking away.

He’s set to make $32 million this year. They can throw the same tag on him again in 2024 as well as 2025. Franchise tag salaries are guaranteed. The ball is in Lamar’s court:

  1. Sign the tag and play for $32 million
  2. Find a team that is willing to give him the contract he wants (at the same time making that team weaker by having to give up a pair of 1st round picks meaning he’s likely to walk into a weaker situation than he’s currently in with Baltimore when it comes to winning).
  3. Sign a long term deal with Baltimore
  4. Sit out

The timing is the real issue here.

It would be interesting to see what Baltimore does if this isn’t settled prior to the draft. Would they look at moving up for a QB?

Since you quoted me I will respond. The poster above me brought up the idea of the Ravens choosing to walk away. I simply pointed out that tagging someone is not walking away. Walking away is exactly what Lamar wants them to do.

Now let’s do some math. The first tag is $32.4M. The second tag is no less than $38.88M. The third tag is the doozy, which will be $60M. That’s $131.2M over the next 3 years. So why would Lamar sign for what his tag values are? And remember this. Once he’s burned up all 3 tags, he can’t be tagged again by any team.

No I didn’t.

But you are right. The Ravens want him back and are using their leverage. They don’t want him back on his terms.

Let’s make sure we are all on the same page. You said “The smart teams will simply walk away and make those players someone else’ problem.”

Lamar wants the Ravens to walk away and let him be someone else’s problem. But the Ravens didn’t do that.

Not sure what outcome you are looking for. I’ve agreed that you are right.

That post was in response to to the idea that teams would adapt to signing players to fully guaranteed deals.

Ravens Offered Lamar Jackson $175MM In Total Guarantees; Deal No Longer On Table

April 4th, 2023 at 4:54pm CST by Sam Robinson

Offseason No. 3 of the Ravens-Lamar Jackson contract story has produced the biggest headlines, which include franchise tag and a trade request. But this saga’s second year included the clearest picture of Baltimore’s offer.

Long reported to have offered Jackson $133MM fully guaranteed, the Ravens proposed the former MVP a deal with $175MM in total guarantees. The $42MM injury guarantee would have shifted to a full guarantee early over the course of the contract, Albert Breer of SI.com reports. An additional $25MM — present in the fourth year of the contract — would have become guaranteed in Year 3 of the deal, Breer adds. Overall, that 2022 offer topped $290MM over six years. The $175MM in total guarantees would have topped Russell Wilson ($165MM) for second in the league.

The year-out guarantees helped move the Patrick Mahomes Chiefs extension past the goal line in 2020, and while that 10-year agreement is an outlier and rather team-friendly, the two-time MVP has protections via the advanced rolling guarantees. Mahomes joins most of the league’s franchise QBs in having signed an extension before his fourth season. Jackson joins Dak Prescott and Kirk Cousins in not doing so. Prescott, however, had a deal in place by this point in his career; he signed his Cowboys extension in March 2021. Jackso

Fields isn’t going to last 3 seasons if he keeps taking hits like last year.

at least 4 seasons, maybe 5!

And now we know why he’s not signed.

Lamar is currently on the Dak Prescott track, with two franchise tags before signing a four year contract where he can’t be franchised again. Lamar is going to be just fine whether he gets an offer sheet, new contract or plays on the franchise tag. But I do think he’d benefit greatly from an agent.

Just don’t get seriously hurt while playing on a tag, that’s the risk. Kyler Murray got his massive contract then immediately tore his ACL running, but that 160 mill guaranteed is still his regardless of his future. Lamar needs an agent.

Or insurance

Good point, but can you take out a 150 million insurance policy!?

They can fix Steve Austin → for 6 million

…but you can’t hurt the other Steve Austin

Well let’s be honest he should have insurance from the day he went to the NFL if not in college if he doesn’t I would shocked.

Definitely needs an agent.
