I think he stays in Toronto

“Bichette told everyone who would listen that he wants to stay a Blue Jay as free agency approaches,” Steve Simmons reported for the Toronto Sun. “He said that publicly while quietly telling some people he wouldn’t mind playing in New York in the future. The immediate future.”

Bo might prefer Toronto… But he is playing the game. More teams interested the more money he gets.

TheAthletic: What we’re hearing at MLB’s GM meetings about the trade market for starting pitchers
Full article at link

Skubal
As one Detroit Tigers person put it, “We want to win with him.” Well, 2026 figures to be their last chance. Top Scott Boras clients hardly ever sign extensions when they are this close to free agency.

The Tigers surely could do better in a trade of Skubal than they would through draft-pick compensation if he left as a free agent. But to what end? The Tigers have reached the postseason the past two years, reviving baseball in Detroit thanks in large part to Skubal’s presence. Trading him almost certainly would amount to a step back short-term.

A deadline deal might make sense if the Tigers fall out of contention, but the odds of that happening in the AL Central are slim. And another thing: If the Tigers lose Skubal as a free agent, his roster spot would not become a black hole. The team would try, as best it could, to replace him.

===

Peralta

Like Skubal, Peralta is entering his walk year. Faced with a similar situation two years ago, the Milwaukee Brewers traded Corbin Burnes to the Baltimore Orioles for shortstop Joey Ortiz, left-hander D.L. Hall and the 34th pick in the 2024 draft.

The difference with Peralta is that he is set to earn $8 million while Burnes was due nearly twice that amount. The modest salary makes Peralta highly attractive to potential suitors, but also quite affordable for the Brewers.
…

Alcantara

Chances are, the Miami Marlins will trade Alcantara or fellow right-hander Edward Cabrera. But after a 17-win improvement from 2024 to ‘25, club officials are feeling frisky, confident the team can be even more competitive in ‘26. Keeping the rotation intact would make that goal more realistic.

Which isn’t to say the Marlins won’t jump at the right offer for Alcantara, particularly with him guaranteed $17 million this season plus a $2 million buyout on a $21 million club option for 2027.

Alcantara had a 7.22 ERA before the All-Star Game, a 3.33 ERA after. The Marlins know his value. They also know he can help them win.

Ryan

Minnesota Twins president of baseball operations Derek Falvey sounds like a man trying to keep his balance in a hurricane, telling reporters Tuesday, “I remain personally committed to figuring out what are the ways we can add to this group to make it better.”

The question is whether Twins ownership shares Falvey’s desire. It certainly did not at the deadline,

Theathletic: MLB GM Meetings buzz: Future of Skenes and Skubal, Orioles getting calls for Rutschman and more

What the future might hold for Paul Skenes, Tarik Skubal

One thing that came out of the GM meetings was the strong statement from the Pirates that they are definitely going to hold on to Paul Skenes for the 2026 season, so we’ll table those trade talks until next offseason. There was a report this week that Skenes had made it known he prefers to be traded to the Yankees at some point, but he denied that rumor at his Cy Young Award press conference.

The Tigers have told teams that they are not expecting to trade Tarik Skubal this offseason, but the main difference between their position and the one taken by the Pirates vis-à-vis Skenes is that the Tigers will listen to offers for Skubal. Once they get that overwhelming offer — which they will — they’ll likely have no choice but to trade him.

The Tigers have no chance of signing Skubal to a long-term extension this winter unless their next proposal is an offer that would make him the highest-paid pitcher in MLB, and not by a little but by a lot. It’s unlikely they make that offer. Waiting until the July trade deadline to deal Skubal would be foolish because, in all likelihood, the Tigers will be in the postseason race and the return would probably be less than what they’d get this winter.

Expect the big-market teams with strong farm systems and the financial wherewithal to sign Skubal long-term to make their interest known, teams like the Yankees, Blue Jays, Red Sox, Giants and, yes, the Dodgers.

The market for closers is active

Teams like the Braves, Orioles, Cubs, Twins, Dodgers, Diamondbacks, Giants, Tigers, Rangers and Reds were actively involved in discussions for closers, along with the Yankees from a distance, while the Blue Jays are pushing for help in the back end of their bullpen, according to The Athletic’s Mitch Bannon. As reported in The Athletic, the Orioles have room to spend this offseason and could also factor heavily in the closer market.

The free-agent bullpen market is strong this year with Edwin DĂaz, Robert Suarez, Pete Fairbanks and Devin Williams leading the way. This group could create a record bidding war and it will be fun to monitor.

• Most of the AL East teams are preparing to spend significantly this offseason, with the exception of the Rays. Can’t we just move them to the AL Central?

• The Mariners have made it clear that first base is their top priority this offseason and re-signing Josh Naylor is their top choice to check that box, but they are prepared to pivot if that doesn’t work out.

• Some other big names are being dangled on the trade market. The Red Sox continue to listen to offers for outfielder Jarren Duran and will move him for the right corner infielder or starting pitcher. The Guardians are open to moving outfielder Steven Kwan for more power and a better option for centerfield. Intending to add controllable young starting pitching, the Cardinals hope to trade veterans Willson Contreras, Sonny Gray and Nolan Arenado this winter, though they’ll need to convince each of them to waive their no-trade clauses.

Proposal for bullpen rebuild.

  1. Re-sign Finnegan. 3/42. He is no spring chicken but has been effective for half a decade and still has enough in the tank.
  2. TRADE ALERT! Javy Baez to the Dodgers for Tanner Scott. What??!! Oh yeah. Coulda told you (and I did) that Scott would wilt in a big market. He has some control issues, but lefties take longer a day he is a power lefty, exactly what the Tigers need. Javy is a SS/CF whiz that is better on bigger stages and the playoffs. Allows LAD to move Mookie off SS to CF or corner, and shift Edman to 2b ( both their natural positions). Defensive upgrade and since they re-signed Muncy, they are still 6 difference maker bats deep, 7 if Pages is for real. Contracts? Javy has 2/48 left and Scott has 3/56, though with deferrals the AAV is lower than it looks, only 15.4m)
  3. So, there’s 3 big arms at the back, HHH for the middle, Montero the Younger for bulk and pick your poison for either another bulk, a 1 pitch specialist like Montero the Elder, or a 3rd lefty.

Add Bregman 6/160 or whatever. Promote McG and Anderson as keystone, Colt plays DH/INF UTILITY and we wait for Clark to replace Parker. Payroll in 26 in good shape around 175

BriceĂąo coming in 27 and Rainier in 28. Resign Skub and let Mize determine his path (TBH ai probably let him walk after this year for comp pick) while Melton and Jobe move up the rotation ladder alongside Olson, leaving room for a vet with playoff experience.

2027-28 Payroll with Finnegan, Scott, Bregman and Skub about 200, in line with increased attendance revenue and expectations.

Los Angeles Dodgers

Potential trade return: RHP Emmet Sheehan, LHP Justin Wrobleski, LHP Jackson Ferris and OF Zyhir Hope

…Another idea would be to substitute Tyler Glasnow for Sheehan in the deal. This would give the Tigers a top-of-the-rotation starter to replace Skubal and they would control Glasnow for three more years. Glasnow does not have a no-trade clause with the Dodgers and has $94 million remaining on his contract if the team-half of the 2028 mutual option is exercised.

Boston Red Sox

Potential trade return: LHP Connelly Early, UT Kristian Campbell, OF Jhostynxon GarcĂa and RHP Christian Foutch

New York Mets

Well, to this point I like a lot of what Harris has done to build a foundation for the future for this team. Development, infrstructure improvements, draft etc

The concern is his underwhelming performance at the trade deadlines starting with the blunder with ER and the Dodgers trade. See how he handles this situation which will probably define his career or end his career in Detroit.

None of those
