What’s your expectation for James Houston

Just a question, does Houston qualify for any financial incentives? This is what I found…" For players drafted in the third round and later, along with players who go undrafted, the minimum playtime incentive is set at 15% for the first year and 30% for any subsequent years (30). These incentives can’t be guaranteed for skill, injury or cap and can only be based on playtime in the current League Year.Mar 27, 2017"

I’m not positive, but I think what you are looking at has to do with incentives allowed in rookie contracts. i.e. we couldn’t put a 5% playtime incentive in Malcom Rodriguez contract.

As for Houston, he’s been cut and signed with us in November as a Street Free Agent, his contract can be whatever the Lions and Houston negotiated. Having said that, there probably isn’t much other than the $75K workout bonus that he can earn next year.

There is a performance based pool that NFL players can earn money from. It’s based on playing time and is adjusted for the amount you earn (i.e. Even though Hutchinson played more, he won’t get as much from the pool as Rodriguez or DeShon Elliot). For the 2020 season, Amani Oruwariye earned $572K in additional compensation, along with other Lions. I can’t find last years figures for the lions.

Houston will be just fine, he will be taken care of.

This is what I remember but couldn’t find.

Just curious: Does the money players earn from the performance based pool count against their team’s salary cap for the next year?

Nope

It’s interesting to see “The (Da) Problem” nickname spreading through the media in articles. Lions should consider offering him a 4 year contract in the off season. He’s making almost nothing right now and offering to pay him more now for extended years later would be money well spent.

He’s a rookie, who has played 6 games, he’s not getting a new 4 year contract just yet. Pump the brakes a little here. Now someone like St. Brown, who has had 2 outstanding years, entering year 3 next year, now that is someone you might consider extending if you could get a reasonable deal with him.

Isn’t he a RFA after the end of next year? Someone correct me if I’m wrong. (I want to be wrong)

I actually think you are right. But, since he’s a RFA after 2023, we could put a high draft pick tender on him if he continues to kick ass, which means if someone signed him, we could match and or get that high pick. So, we should have control for at least 2023 and 2024. Someone correct me if I’m off on that. Maybe after he sacks Rodgers 3 more times on Sunday, an extension might make sense. haha

I think NFL teams would be smart to look at the Atlanta Braves and try to emulate some of what they are doing inside the constraint of the difference in financial structure between the leagues.

I have a very simple expectation for Houston. To inflict pain on Aaron Rodgers

Pain. That is all

I just found out about these incentives after the last game. So how important are snap counts for guys like Barnes, who has had his snap count limited all year. It is my understanding that he would double his salary next year, with 30% of the snaps and right now, peculiarly, he sits at 29%.

Snap counts mean everything for any play time incentive.

If he didn’t get hurt (Vikings/Jets games), he’d be over 30% already.

The section you are referencing is something negotiated by the team and the players agent. All contracts are different and you’d need to look at the actual contract to know for sure.

An incentive that doubles his 2023 salary? I’d find that highly unlikely for 90% playing time, let alone 30%.

The other bonus pool that I mentioned above, is performance based pay. As part of the CBA, part of the players benefits is a $10M (estimate) bonus pool that is distributed to all players who played snaps on the team for the year. All players get something (even Jared Goff, although his will probably be in the $2K range because of his salary). Amani O got more than $500K when he played in more than 90% of the defensive snaps. From this pool, Barnes might get $300K . . . maybe.

I remember back after Dan was hired on as HC, he responded to a question about what the Lions are looking for in players. He had several points on his criteria. The one that stands out to me right now is thst he wanted players he could move around, be flexible or multiple…the only exception is that they have to be REALLY REALLY GOOD at one thing.

Enter James Houston.

I’ve enjoyed Rogers film reviews and looking forward to this one. I had mentioned in one of the Houston threads how he was a third down/passing down specialist to getting more play this past Sunday.

Injuries do not count against the incentive, it is 30% average snaps for the games he is eligible to play. However games you sit WSH, MIN, do count against the incentive.
I was told by a very reliable source at 30% his salary doubles for next year, no reason for that source to lie to me. Again he sits at 29%

I have Barnes having played 316 snaps for the year out of 1076 total defensive snaps 29.37%

Pro-football refence has him at 33% for 14 games (see snap counts toward bottom of page). PFR snap counts are adjusted for games missed due to injury, they have him playing 315 out of 954. If that’s the case, he’ll make the 30% even if there are 90 snaps (most this year are 77) and Barnes doesn’t play in a single defensive snap.

An escalator is an incentive that increases a future salary and since the 2011 CBA, I’ve never seen a Detroit rookie have an escalator. Slay (2nd rd pick) and Diggs (6th rd pick) never hit an escalator. Slay played in about 40% his rookie season and more than 90% after that. Diggs played in 45%, 54% 2nd year and 73% 3rd year.

While reliable, I think whoever you’re getting the info from is misinterpreting the info.

What are you talking about? He literally said “These are not the same old Lions” and gave them their props. Lets keep to facts.

I’m talking about, “losing to that team”. Back in November.
Now, he sees the 5 headed Cerberus coming to knock the Ayahuasca out of him.
